Eagles batter Blue Jays

The Oran High School baseball team opened its participation in class 1 district 2 baseball tournament in Bell City on Tuesday. With rain in the forecast, it was decided to play the semi-finals and finals on the same day.  The top-seeded Eagles were slated to face the fifth-seeded Oak Ridge Blue Jays, who had upset the fourth-seeded Zalma Bulldogs the day before.

Oran and Oak Ridge had met up early in the season and the Eagles came away with a three-inning mercy rule win 16-1.  This time it took five innings for Oran to claim a 12-2 victory.

Kaden Hargrove got the start on the mound and worked around a leadoff walk with the help of a 6-4-3 double play.  Oran took control in the bottom of the first as they sent nine to the plate.  Todd Priggel singled with one out.  He scored on Kole Simms two-out double.  Simms scored on Kaden Hargrove's single.  Dawson Menz was hit by a pitch as was Luke Patterson to load the bases. Hargrove scored on a wild pitch to Dane Shands who eventually walked.

Oak Ridge wasted a two-out double in the second and Oran tacked on another run.

Priggel doubled with one-out stole third and scored on a throwing error.

The Blue Jays picked up their two runs in the third.  They started the inning with back to back singles, a fielder's choice and an error to plate two to make the score 4-2.

The Eagles got those two back in the bottom of the fourth when Connor Kern walked to lead off the inning and Priggel homered to right with one out.

Oran picked up six in the fifth off of three Blue Jays pitchers to enact the mercy rule.  After the first batter was retired, the BlueJays issued a walk, a hit batter and then three more consecutive walks.  Priggel drove in a pair with a single before Ty Johnson drove in the final run with a double.

Priggel had four of the Eagles' seven hits going 4-4.  He scored four times and drove in four as well.

Hargrove (2-1) went the distance, picking up the five-inning win.  He allowed two runs, one earned on five hits.  He struck out three and walked one.
