Eagles use three pitchers to shut out Leopold

The Oran High School baseball team started slow yesterday when they hosted the Leopold Wildcats, but got cooking eventually and defeated the visitors 10-0 in six innings.

Connor Kern, Kaiden Hargrove and Kolten Payne all pitched to help the Eagles improve to 5-0 on the season. The five wins surpass last fall's total of four.

The three combined for a three-hit shutout.  Kern went the first two.  He allowed two hits and walked one.  He struck out five.  Hargrove (2-0), was awarded the victory, going three innings.  He struck out six.  Payne tossed the final frame and allowed one hit, one walk and struck out one batter.

At the plate, Dawson Menz had two hits and two RBI.  Todd Priggel also drove in two.  Menz, Dane Shands and Luke Peterson each had doubles.

Coach Joe Bickings said, " First off it's always good to win a game but unfortunately I didn't think we came ready to play and didn't have the mental game working.  I thought our pitchers did a great job on the mound and competing in the strike zone.  We did have 2 walks but both of them came against their number-three hitter and I'm ok with that.  We don't want another team's best hitter to start a rally or be able to beat us.  Hitting for us was a different story.  We struck out 6 times and when we did put the ball in play we didn't do it with any authority.  As a team, we have some things to work on and I feel like we can take this game (hitting wise) and use it to our advantage and use it as some sort of motivation."

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host a round-robin.  Oran will face St. Paul Lutheran out of Farmington at 11 and then South Pemiscot at three.
