Lady Eagles bounce Bobcats

The Oran High School girls basketball team hosted conference rival Delta last night and picked up two more wins.  The junior varsity was victorious, 58-30 and the varsity 74-58.

In the opener,  Oran jumped out to an 18-8 first period lead and was up 28-15 at intermission and outscored the Bobcats 30-15 in the second half.

The Eagles put three in double-figures, led by Haley Webb's 14, she hit two from beyond the arc.  Traci Hency and Emma Priggel had 10 apiece.

Rylee Boshell hit three threes to account for her nine points.  Grace Davis had six, Daley Siebert scored four and Taylor Hobbs hit a trey for her three points.  Hannah Boshell added a field goal to round out the scoring.

They made 10 of 18 free throw attempts for 55.6%.

Coach Larry Boshell said, " The girls came out after another break of a week in between games and really played well from the start.  We came out and jumped on them quickly in the 1st and 3rd quarters and played solid defense.  This group is coming together well with the limited number of games we have due to other teams only having one team or illness.  We just need to keep learning and get better every time we are on the floor.  Hopefully, we can come out and continue to get better next week in the conference tournament."

Oran trailed early in the first during the varsity contest, the score was tied at 6 with 5:00 left when Katie Webb picked up her second foul but went on a 9-2 run and Delta took its first time out with at 3:24 it was a 9-3 run to the end of the first and  Oran led 24-11after one.

The Eagles were up 40-24 at the half, in a game that felt much closer than the score indicated.  The two squads played even in the second half.

Kaylee Payne led the Eagles with 20 points, including two treys, eight rebounds and four assists.  Katie Webb had 15 points and Traci Hency scored 11.

Mallory Lowes had eight, including one from beyond the arc.  Grace Davis had six, Taylor Lowes and Hope Woodfin each scored five and they each hit a three-pointer.  Heather Gosche hit a pair of field goals for her four points.

They made 19-46 from inside the arc for 41.3%, 5-16 from beyond for 31.2% and 21-27 from the line for 77.8%.

Coach Boshell said, "We came out again and matched up for most of the game against a very quick Delta team.  I think the girls stepped up to the challenge and did a good job guarding.  We had some breakdowns and miscommunications a few times but we kept our composure and figured it out.  We dealt with some foul trouble as well and had other players step up when needed.  Offensively, we had a few turnovers when they pressured us but for the most part, we took care of the ball.  It can always be better and that is what we are striving for."

"This team is fun to watch and hopefully, we continue to work and get better as we get closer to the postseason," he added.

The junior varsity improved to 4-0 in the conference and 5-1overall.  They will take on East Prairie Monday at 4 pm in the first round of the conference tournament in Charleston

The varsity is now 5-0 and 12-3.  They play Saturday morning at 10 a.m. against the winner of Friday's play-in game between East Prairie and Oak Ridge.
