JHBB: Eagles split with Cubs

For the first time this season an Oran Junior High School boys basketball team felt the agony of defeat as the the 7th grade lost to the Bell City Cubs by a final score of 45-30.  The 8th grade gained a bit of revenge for the younger group by holding the Cubs scoreless in a two quarter game, 36-0.  Originally scheduled as home games, they were held in Bell City because of a water main break and boil water order in Oran.

In the game one, the Eagles fell behind early against a Cub team that featured a very good inside-outside game.  Oran trailed 12-4 after the first quarter and 22-10 at the half.

The Eagles cut the margin to six late in the third quarter, but a call that went against Oran followed by a long three by Bell City changed the momentum and the Eagles never threatened afterwards.

Oran trailed by 9, 31-22 after the third.

Bell City hit 6 from beyond the arc and was 5-7 from the free throw line.

The Eagles were led by Ty Johnson's 14 points.  Drew Smith scored 9.  Kaden Hargrove added 4, while Kaleb Gosche chipped in 3.

Oran, who fell to 4-1, was 6-14 from the line for 43%.

During game two, which was only 2 quarters due to a limited Bell City roster, which were the same players from game one, the Eagles scored early and often.

Oran scored 11 points in the first 1:49 before a Cub time-out.  Nothing changed after the teams broke their huddles, Oran put up 20 more during the rest of the quarter.  The game featured a running clock during the final period.

Landon Stanberry scored 17 with one 3-point field goal.  Todd Priggel had 12.

Tyson Goodale added 4, Gabe Fox tallied 2 and Jakob Findley chipped in 1.

From the free throw line, the 8th graders were 3-8 for 38%.  They improved their record to 5-0.

Both teams will take the court again on Thursday evening at Richland High School.  Game time is 6 pm.  Once again, it will be only 6 quarters of action.  This time the 7th grade will play only two and the 8th grade will play 4.
