Girls cruise into championship game

The Oran High School girls basketball team picked up an easy win during the semifinals of the Class 2, District 2 tournament last night at the Perry Park Center in Perryville.  The Eagles routed number 4 seed, Bismarck 88-41.

Oran scored first and jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the opening minutes and was up 27-9 after one.  The lead was 51-18 at the break and the Eagles coasted to the 47 point win with most of the starters only seeing about 3 quarters of action.

Coach Ethan Evans said, "Our press looked better than it has in awhile. We were able to turn them over early and create some easy baskets. We also did a good job moving the ball on offense. We will need the same kind of effort on Thursday night against Chaffee."

All 12 players on the roster saw action and 9 scored, led, once again, by Leah Cauble.  She finished with 32.  She hit one from distance, was 5-5 from the line and had 9 assists.  Kaylee Payne put in 17. She also had a trey and picked up 7 steals.

Jessie Long finished with 8 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.  Brianna Stause, who in the first half couldn't buy a bucket, hit 2 free throws in the 3rd quarter and then hit 2 of her next 3 attempts from beyond the arc.  She had 8 points.  Kenzie Graviett ended up with 6 points and 6 boards.  Savannah Below and Katelyn Streeter each hit a three-pointer and wound up with 5 points.  Claire Ramsey had 4 points and 6 rebounds, while Madison hit a long-range bomb for her 3 points.

Paige Bradley, Heather Gosche and Taylor Lowes played but did not score.

Oran set a single-season record for most wins (24) and they will face the number 2 seeded Chaffee Lady Devil on Thursday at 6 pm.  The first-seeded Eagles are looking their fourth-straight district crown.  Chaffee is making its fourth appearance in the title game in the last 5 year.  They last won in 2015.

The two teams have played 3 times previously this season with Oran winning all 3.

The Eagles are currently 24-3 on the year.
