Lady Eagles cruise into district championship game

Sam Welter tossed a two-hit shutout and Jessie Long drove in 4 as the top-seeded Oran High School softball team routed the number four seeded Leopold Wildcats 15-0 in four innings at Advance yesterday.

The Eagles jumped out with a 3 run first.  Long drove in 2 with a triple and she came home on Kenzie Graviett's groundout.

Five runs flew home in the second, thanks to 3 walks, 2 wild pitches and 3 singles.

It would be 10-0 after 3 when Katelyn Streeter led off with a walk, went to second on a passed ball and to third on Sydney Kern's bunt single.  Those two executed a double steal and Streeter scored.  Kern moved up on a passed ball and then came home on Leah Cauble's sac fly.

Oran closed out the mercy-rule victory with 4 consecutive hits in the fourth.  Claire Ramsey singled and came home on Welter's rbi double.  Abbie Madigan and Taylor Lowes singled off the bench.  Three walks and one out later Long drove in the deciding run.

Coach Eftink said, "Everyone on the team got an at bat. Abbie and Taylor came up with hits. Those two have been good pinch hitters all year."

Long finished 3-4 and scored twice to go along with her 4 rbi.  She now has 33 on the season to lead the team.  Kern was 2-3 to up her team-leading average to .556.  Graviett added 2 runs driven in.

"Jessie had four RBI on the day and Kenzie drove in a pair. Both had good at-bats with runners on base.  That's important this time of year," Eftink commented.

Welter picked up her 10th win of the season as the Lady Eagles improved to 17-0.  She allowed 2 hits, walked 4 and struck out 6.

Eftink said of Welter, "Sam struggled with her control a bit, but she made good pitches when she had to. The long layoff between games probably played a part in her control issues. I expect her to come out on fire against Scott City in the championship game. She's a trooper and cool as a cucumber on the mound."

Oran is scheduled to face Scott City at 4 pm today in the district 4 championship game at Advance.
