The Lady Eagles varsity volleyball team picked up its first SEMO Conference victory last night with a thrilling three-set win over the visiting Scott City Rams, 19-25, 25-20, 25-21. The junior varsity fell 15-25, 19-25.
In the opener, Samantha Below had nine kills, 3 digs and a block. Heather Gosche had five kills, 2 digs, a pair of aces and a block. Sam Welter handed out six assists and had three digs. Kennedi McVay had seven assists to go along with four digs, two kills and an ace. Megan Henson had three kills, plus an ace and an assist.
The jayvee is now 2-5 overall and 1-2 in league play.
The nightcap saw Cassie Cochran and Kaylee Payne both record double-doubles. Cochran had 18 assists and 10 digs to go along with a kill. Payne had 14 kills and 14 digs plus an ace. Katelyn Streeter had 14 digs plus an ace and an assist.
Jessie Long had nine kills, five digs and three blocks. Kamryn Graviett had a pair of aces and kills. She also added an assist. Ali Hornbeck had three digs and an ace. Malia LeGrand and Below had three and two digs, respectively.
The varsity improved to 6-7-1 and 1-2.
After the contest, Coach Wibbenmeyer said, "The girls started out slow and didn’t work together and that’s why we lost the first game. We still played a little slow the second set but we pulled it off. The third set we used their errors and picked up all their tips they threw at us. In the end, it was a fun game to watch because either team could have won!"
Both squads will be back in action on Monday when they host Zalma at 6 pm.
