It was not a game that will be included in a highlight reel at the end of the season, but the Oran High School girls basketball team picked up a 61-48 win over the upset-minded Scott County Central Bravettes last night in a semifinal contest of the 2018 Delta New Years' Tournament.
The six-seeded Bravettes led the second-seeded Lady Eagles 15-10 after the first period, but Oran soared back to take a 38-24 lead into the halftime locker rooms. During the second half Scott Central cut the lead to nine on a couple of occasions but could get no closer and the Eagles picked up the 13 point win.
Coach Ethan Evans said, "I knew coming in that this would be a different game than the first time we played and that Coach Limbaugh would have them ready."
"We came out flat in the first quarter but responded well during the 2nd. We just couldn’t keep that momentum going and put the game out of reach," he added.
Leah Cauble led all scorers with 29. She hit one trey and was six of eight from the line. Claire Ramsey finished with 12 points, six of which came from beyond the arc. She also dished a team-high six assists.
Katelyn Streeter had nine points, including one three-pointer. Jessie Long ended up with six points and seven boards. Katie Webb scored five points and had 10 rebounds before fouling out late in the game.
Oran hit 20 of 46 from inside the arc for 43.5% and only 4 of 20 from beyond for 20%. At the line, they hit 9 of 17 for 52.9%. They upped their record to 8-2.
The Eagles, the defending tournament champions, will face the top-seeded Saxony Lutheran Crusaders, in a rematch of last years' title tilt, tonight at 7:30. Last year Oran defeated Saxony by two points in overtime.
