Eagles soar past Wildcats to homecoming victories

The Oran High School boys basketball teams celebrated the 2018 homecoming by picking up two easy wins over the visiting Leopold Wildcats on Friday night.  The junior varsity won 73-25.  The varsity picked up an 81-48 win.

Both games started out with the Eagles trailing early.

Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "I thought both teams got off to slow starts at the very beginning but were able to play better the as the game went on. We were able to get everyone playing time which is always nice on homecoming night. Those players who come in off the bench come to practice every day and it is always nice to see them perform well in games."

The junior varsity trailed 4-0 a minute and a half into the contest, but two minutes later, they had taken the lead 7-5.  Oran led after one, 18-12.

With this year's homecoming theme "The Wizard of Oz", the junior varsity defense was like a squadron of flying monkeys during the second period and held the Leopold to a single tally.

At the intermission, the lead was 51-13 and the game was all but over.

The Eagles would hold Leopold to only 12 second-half points, including only one in the fourth period and cruised to the 49 point win.

Tyson Goodale was the game's leading scorer with 16 in two periods of action.  Ty Johnson had 10, including six points from beyond the arc.

Tristin Schlosser had nine points, including a trey.  Evan Montgomery and Langdon Scheeter each added eight.  Montgomery also had a trey.  Kaiden Massey, Cooper Priggel and Myles Trankler all put in six.

The younger team was 9 of 17 from the line for 53%.

They improved to 12-3 on the year.

The varsity trailed early in its contest, too.  But it wasn't long before the Wildcats said, "Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road".  Oran led 35-12 after one and 57-24 at the half.

The two teams played even during the final two quarters and Oran picked up the 33 point victory.

Cole Priggel lit it up for 27 to lead all scorers in just three quarters of action.   Jacob Shoemaker added 15 and Layne Johnson had 14.  Shoemaker made two threes and Johnson one.  Both did not play during the fourth.

Peyton McVay scored seven fourth-quarter points off the bench.  Todd Priggel and Drew Reischman both tallied four.  Calen Read totaled three.  Bradley Brooks, who had to be helped off the court with an apparent foot injury during the third quarter, Denver Elfrink and Tyson Goodale, all scored two.

The team was 16 of 24 at the line for 67%.

The varsity is now 16-3.

The boys will be back in action on Tuesday when they host conference and district rival Chaffee at 6 pm.
