2nd quarter propels boys into championship game

The number-two seed Oran High School boys basketball team trailed the third-seeded Chaffee Red Devils 13-12 after one period of play last night during a semifinal matchup in the Class 2, District 2 tournament at the Perry Park Center in Perryville.  Chaffee had picked up a 13 point win on the Eagles' home floor three weeks earlier after Oran had won a 26 point affair during the Christmas tournament.  But, those 13 points the Devils scored in the first would be the last they would tally until 30 seconds into the third after the Eagles tossed a 17-0 shutout to take a 29-13 lead into halftime.

Chaffee hit a field goal a half-minute in, but Jacob Shoemaker then hit his only trey of the night to quell the possibility of a Red Devil run, and Oran went on to a 20 point 59-39 win to advance into Thursday night's championship game against top-seeded and host St. Vincent.  St. Vincent moved on thanks to a 71-52 victory over number five Valle Catholic.

Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "I didn’t feel that we shot very well but we didn’t let that affect our energy level.  I was also proud of the way we rebounded the ball.  I was very proud of our defense in holding their leading two scorers, who are very good players, to a combined 17 points.  Hopefully, we will continue to guard as well and shoot the ball a little better."

Layne Johnson had 17 of his own to lead all scorers.  He hit two from beyond the arc and his only free throw attempt.  Shoemaker had 15 including that third quarter three.

Cole Priggel finished with eight and hit both from the charity stripe and Tyson Goodale also added eight points off the bench.  Todd Priggel had six and made both free shots.  Drew Reischman also had six points before fouling out.

The Eagles were 9 of 11 from the line for 82%.

Oran is now 20-5 and they will be playing in their eighth consecutive district championship game.  The boys will play at approximately 7:30 on Thursday.

The first game of the night will feature the number-one seeded Oran Lady Eagles looking for the fifth straight district crown as they face Chaffee at 6 pm.
