Lady Eagles soar to two wins on the road

The Oran High School girls basketball teams claimed a pair of victories last night in East Prairie spoiling the host's senior night.  The junior varsity won 32-14 in an abbreviated contest of only two periods.   The varsity had a laugher, winning 71-25.

About the first game, Coach Ethan Evans said, "The girls came out hitting shots from the get-go. They also got out in the passing lanes and created turnovers that led to easy baskets. It was a good 2 quarters."

Oran led 19-6 after one.

Taylor Lowes scored nine of her game-high 12 during those first seven minutes, all from beyond the arc.  She hit four from long-range on the night.

Heather Gosche had nine points, Mallory Lowes finished with four, while Katie Webb had three.  Kennedi McVay and Alyssa Spane had two each.

The younger girls were two of three from the line for 67%.

They are now 7-1 and 4-0 in the S-MC.

The varsity started a little slow from the field.  They could not buy a field goal to open the game.  They made three early free throws.  After the home team hit a field goal it was 3-2.  Madison Ramsey checked into the game and promptly hit a three-pointer to give her team a spark.

Oran was on top 24-2 after the first quarter and it was 36-2 before East Prairie would score again with about 3 and a half minutes remaining before halftime.  When both teams headed to their locker rooms for the intermission,  the score was 48-8.  Heading into the fourth it was 66-16.

The clock ran the entire second half.

Coach Evans said, "We came out with a little bit of mental and physical exhaustion from the Saxony game during the 1st part of the game. We finally got going a few minutes in and played fairly well except at the free throw line."

Leah Cauble outscored East Prairie on her own, knocking down 26.  She also had a team-high eight rebounds.  Kaylee Payne had 14 points, five steals and four assists.  Jessie Long finished with 11 points and seven boards.

Webb had nine points, Ramsey ended up with five, Katelyn Streeter had four.  Savannah Below round out the scoring with two.

After a great shooting percentage from three-point range the night before (55%), they were only 2-17 for 12% last evening.  Oran hit 27-45 from two for 59%.  From the free throw line, they hit 20-31 for 65%.

The varsity is now 16-4 and 5-0.

Oran will be back in action on Monday when the host district-rival St. Vincent on Monday at 6 pm.  It will also be "Lil Cheer Night."
