After slow start, softball swamps East Prairie

The Oran High School softball team used big innings late to come from behind and defeat visiting East Prairie 13-4 yesterday.

Leah Cauble homered in the first to give Oran an early lead.  Coach Jim Eftink said,"Leah really mashed the ball in the first inning. I’ve watched her for three years now and that’s the hardest ball I’ve seen her hit. No doubt when she hit it that it was gone."

But over the next two innings, the guests would plate three unearned runs off Kaylee Payne to take a lead into the bottom of the fourth.

Eftink said, "Their pitcher had us popping everything up at the start. We finally got our timing down in the fourth."

Then the first seven Eagles reached base and six of them scored and Oran regained the lead.

Samantha Welter and Maddie Graviett each doubled in the inning.  The Eagles sent 12 to the plate on six hits and three walks.

East Prairie would get their only earned run in the fifth.

A one-out single, followed by a walk and a double steal and then an rbi groundout made the score 7-4.

Oran got that run back in the bottom half.  Taylor Lowes led off with a single, stole second and then advanced the rest of the way on a pair of passed balls.

The Eagles put the game away in the sixth when they batted around and scored five.

Three consecutive doubles by Ramsey, Welter and Katelyn Streeter started the inning.  The big blow was a two-out two-rbi triple from Cauble.

Oran pounded out 14 hits on the day.  Cauble was 3-4 with a walk and 4 rbi.  She was a double shy of the cycle.

Ramsey, Welter, Streeter and Lowes each had two hits.  Ramsey had two doubles.  Welter drove in three.  Streeter and Lowes drove in two apiece.

Payne (3-0) went the distance, allowing five hits, four runs, only one earned.  She walked two and struck out five.

Coach Eftink said, "Nice job by the ladies. We’re entering the heart of the schedule now—we should learn quite a bit about this team in the next two weeks."

The Eagles improved to 4-0.  Oran's game for tomorrow has already been canceled due to the weather forecast.  The next scheduled game is Monday at home, taking on Woodland at 4:30.
