Jr. High girls advance to finals

On Monday, the Oran Junior High girls basketball teams picked up a pair of wins to advance to the Tuesday night finals of the Scott-Mississippi County Conference Tournament hosted by Charleston.

The seventh-grade defeated Kelly 41-30, while the eighth-grade routed Chaffee, 50-19.

Coach Ethan Evans said, "I didn’t think we played our best game. Defensively we fouled way too much and gave them most of their 1st half points on free throws."

Kelly scored nine of its 13 points at the line during the first 12 minutes.

Bralynn Morgan led the way with 22 points.  She hit two from beyond the arc.  Addie Nichols scored 14.

Molly Spane had three and Lilly Knotts chipped in a field goal to round out the scoring.

The team hit 3 of 8 free throw attempts for 38%, compared to Kelly's 10-15, to improve to 12-1 and move on to the championship game against Delta, the team that had handed the Eagles its only loss of the season less than a week ago.  That game was a 31-21 defeat at Delta.

In the eighth-grade contest, Oran led 30-15 at the break and outscored the Devils 20-4 the rest of the way.

Evans said, "The girls picked the defense up in the 2nd half to finally put the game away. Offensively we played pretty well but we didn’t really start guarding until the 3rd quarter."

Grace Davis topped the team with 17.  Liza Dannenmueller had 13.

Laney Shy scored nine, Maddie Stickel six and Emma Priggel five, including a trey.

They were 5-8 from the line for 63%.  The win upped their mark to 13-2 and also propelled them into the tournament final against Delta, who had won the previous match-up 46-41.
