Eagles soar into Championship game

The Oran High School boys varsity basketball team picked up a 74-61 win over the Kelly Hawks last night, to advance into tonight's title game of the 63rd annual Oran Invitational against Scott County Central.  Game time is scheduled for 8 pm.

Last night, the Eagles jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead about a minute and a half into the contest.

It was 25-13 after one and 45-26 at the break.  The Hawks outscored Oran 35-29 in the second half.

Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "I thought we played with a lot of energy in the first half.  Jacob (Shoemaker) was shooting it very well early and the other guys were very unselfish in feeding the hot hand, which is something we talk about.  We have different people who can score and try to take advantage of who is hot.  I didn’t think I coached a very good game in the second half.  In retrospect, I would do some things differently as a coach in the second half.  This helped lead to a subpar performance on our part.  We didn’t do a good job of pushing the tempo in the second half and recognizing if we had a good shot or if we needed to execute some offense.  I will do a better job of communicating this with the team in the future."

Jacob Shoemaker led all scorers with 48.  He hit eight treys.  30 of the points and seven of the three-pointers came during the first half.  Todd Priggel also reached double figures with 13.  Shoemaker and Priggel each grabbed nine rebounds.  Priggel also had a team-high six assists, two blocks and two steals.

Tyson Goodale finished with six.  Langdon Scheeter had three.  Ty Johnson and Samuel Shoemaker had two apiece.  Johnson was 2 of 2 from the line.

As a team, Oran was 14 of 24 from the charity stripe for 58%.

About tonight, Coach Shoemaker said, "We have a big task in playing SCC for the championship.  We will have to rebound and defend better than we did last night and execute better in the second half in order to have a chance."
