Lady Eagles lose two at Saxony

The Oran High School girls basketball teams traveled to Fruitland last night to take on the Class 3 Saxony Lutheran Lady Crusaders.  The Lady Eagles were on the short-end of to close affairs.  The junior varsity lost 38-37 and the varsity who had a fourth-quarter lead fell 69-65.

During the junior varsity contest, Oran trailed 12-7 after and tied at 16 going into the halftime lockerrooms.  The Lady Eagles fell behind 31-19 heading into the fourth before a valiant comeback fell just short.

Coach Ethan Evans said, "The girls did a nice job of coming back in the fourth quarter after a bad third quarter. The first half we were able to get the ball inside and use our height advantage. During the fourth, we finally started knocking down some open shots. "

Mallory Lowes scored 14, with 11 coming during the fourth, to lead all scorers.  She hit three three's in the final period and four total.  Katie Webb had 11 in two quarters of playing time.

Hope Woodfin finished with eight, including two treys.  Rylee Boshell and Traci Hency had a field goal each.

The team hit 5 of 9 from the line for 56%.  With the loss, they are now 6-3 on the year and will be back in action on Wednesday when they host the Meadow Heights varsity at 6 pm.

During the nightcap, Oran led 14-13 after one but trailed 32-29 at the break.  It was Saxony on top after three, 51-47.  The Lady Eagles went on a 14-5 run to take a 61-56 lead about midway through the fourth but couldn't hold on and dropped a four-point heartbreaker.

Coach Evans commented, "We came up a little short in a very tough place to play. I thought our effort was the best it has been at any point this year. We just have to do a better job of executing coming down the stretch and hitting our free throws."

The squad hit 12-19 from the line for 63%.

Leah Cauble led both squads with 27 points.  She hit two treys and had seven rebounds.  Kaylee Payne added 17 points, hit four from beyond the arc and had a team-high three assists.  Jessie Long finished just shy of a double-double with 10 points and eight boards.

Katie Webb had eight points and had six rebounds.  Katelyn Streeter hit a three-pointer to account for her total and round out the scoring.

As a team, they were, 16-31 from two for 52% and 7-15 from three for 47%.  They now have a record of 9-5.

The varsity and jayvee travel to Delta on Thursday for a conference contest.  The varsity will play first at 6 pm, followed by two quarters of junior varsity.
