Varsity girls roll to title tilt

the Oran High School girls varsity basketball team faced off with the Chaffee Lady Devils for the third time this season last night in a semifinal round contest of the 2018-19 Scott-Mississippi Conference Tournament at home.  The Lady Eagles came away with its third win.  Last night the final was 74-20.

Oran jumped out to a 21-9 lead after one and was up 49-14 at the intermission.  It was 70-20 after three.  Chaffee did not score during a turbo-clock fourth period.

Coach Ethan Evans said, "I thought our defensive effort was pretty good from the get-go. We stalled a little on offense after a quick start but pushed the pace back up to where we want it to be during the third quarter."

Leah Cauble single-handily outscored Chaffee on her own as she netted 41.  She was 10-12 inside the arc and 3-6 from beyond and hit 12 of 13 free throw attempts.  She had a team-high seven boards, dished out three assists and had three steals as well.  Kaylee Payne finished with 11, she connected on three from beyond the arc and had a team-high nine assists to go along with six rebound and three steals.

Jessie Long and Katie Webb, each had seven.  Long had six rebounds and five steals and Webb had three rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots.  Katelyn Streeter made two treys for her points and Taylor Lowes rounded out the scoring with a field goal.

As a team, they were 16-24 from inside the arc for 67%, 8-23 from beyond for 35% and at the line they hit 18-20 for 90%.

With the win, they are now 12-5.

In the previous matchups, Oran defeated Chaffee in the championship of the Lady Devil Invitational
83-21 in early December and then about three weeks ago the Lady Eagles won the regular season game at Chaffee 69-32,

In other action last night, on the varsity side, Kelly defeated Delta 57-50, Scott Central slammed Scott City 82-29 and in junior varsity action, Chaffee claimed the third-place plaque by defeating East Prairie 33-17.

Tonight is the final round of tournament play and will feature Charleston taking on Kelly for the varsity consolation crown at 4 pm.  At 5:15 also on the varsity side will be Chaffee and Scott City squaring off for third place.  The junior varsity championship game between Oran and Kelly is scheduled for 6:30 followed by the varsity championship contest at 7:45, featuring Oran and Scott Central.
