The top-seeded Oran High School varsity boys basketball team began defense of last year's Scott-Mississippi Conference Tournament this morning with a 74-39 win over the eighth-seeded Kelly Hawks.
The Eagles started slow but still managed a 19-13 lead after one. They picked up the pace during the second and led 46-24 at halftime. During the final 16 minutes, the Eagles out-pointed the Hawks, 28-15 and picked up the 35 point victory.
Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "I thought we started a little slow which I anticipated because of the late night and early morning game. We were able to pick up the energy and pick up the win. I am seeing some players making some adjustments which we have worked on which is good to see."
Jacob Shoemaker led all scorers with 18. He hit four treys and was 4-4 at the free throw line. Langdon Scheeter added 15. made three threes and both free throw attempts. Todd Priggel also reached double-digits with 12 points.
Ty Johnson finished with nine, including one from beyond the arc. Tyson Goodale scored eight and Cooper Priggel seven. Priggel hit one three-pointer. Avery Mitchem and Kaiden Massey each had a field goal. Calen Read hit a free throw to round out the scoring.
They were 11 of 17 at the free throw line for 65%.
The varsity improved to 19-1.
They will take on the fourth-seeded East Prairie Eagles on Tuesday at 6:30 at Scott County Central.
