Boys open district play with rout

The Oran High School boys varsity basketball team started yesterday looking for its third-straight district crown.  After yesterday's 78-29 drubbing of eighth-seeded Puxico, the top-seeded Eagles can keep working toward that goal.

Oran led 22-5 after one and the game was pretty much decided by halftime as the Eagles were up 47-14 and Oran cruised to the 49 point win despite not shooting well.  The Eagles defense was smothering at times, they forced 31 turnovers in the game and did not allow the Indians to score double-digits in any period.

Oran featured a balanced scoring attack with four Eagles reaching double-figures, led by Tyson Goodale's game-high 20 he also led the team with eight rebounds.  Jacob Shoemaker had 14 with a trey, Ty Johnson had 12 with a three-pointer and Todd Priggel finished with 11 and dished out a team-high five assists..

Langdon Scheeter had eight points.  Cooper Priggel, Calen Read and Samuel Shoemaker each scored two.  Kaiden Massey hit a free throw to round out the scoring.

The team hit 19 of 29 from the line for 66%.  They were 9 of 24 from inside the arc for 38%, and only 3 of 19 from beyond for a disappointing 16%.

Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "I thought we played with good effort but we didn't shoot the ball very well and we were a little sloppy with our turnovers. We will have to clean those areas up in order to beat Chaffee for the third time this year."

The Eagles committed 18 turnovers.  Oran won the rebounding battle 39-28.

With the win, they improved to 25-1 and will advance to the semifinal round where they will take on the fourth-seed and host, Chaffee Red Devils on Wednesday at 6:30.  It will be the third meeting of the year between the two.

Earlier on Wednesday at 4:00, after receiving a first-round bye, the number-one seeded girls will begin defense of their five-consecutive district titles when they face the fourth-seeded Puxico Lady Indians who defeated Meadow Heights last night in overtime 50-49.  The Lady Eagles have ended Puxico's season the last two years in the sectional round.
