Baseball stumbles at Scott City

The Oran High School baseball team traveled to Scott City on Tuesday and dropped a 7-1 decision to their conference foe.

The Eagles took the lead 1-0 in the second on a one-out single by Kaden Hargrove who advanced to second on a wild pitch and came around to score on a two-out Dawson Menz single.  Unfortunately for Oran, they would not get another baserunner the rest of the day.  The Eagles gave up a six-run fourth inning that chased starter Ty Johnson, who through the first three had given up only a single and a hit batter.

Johnson (4-2), took the loss.  He went three and 2/3 innings giving up six runs, all earned on six hits.  He walked two and struck out five.  Conner Kern tossed the final two and 1/3. he gave up one earned run on one hit.  He walked two and did not strike out any.

Hargrove and Menz had the only Eagle hits.

Coach Joe Bickings said,"One bad inning did us in against Scott City.  We gave up 6 runs in the 4th inning and we weren’t hitting the ball and haven’t been hitting the ball well enough to win.  If we aren’t hitting we have to be good on the mound and in the field.  Right now we are in a funk and have to find a way to break out of it.  We have the athletes and baseball players to do so but they have to start believing they can get out of it and not be so down on themselves.  Baseball is a very mental game and a game of failure.  I feel like when things are going good with this group we have a sense of urgency and have some pep in our step and we look like ball players.  But when things are going bad you can tell in our body language.  You have to be mentally strong in this game and let the negative things go and move on to the next play."

With the loss, Oran fell to 7-6.
