Softball drops finale

The Oran High School softball team added a game for yesterday and they traveled down to Kennett and lost 9-7.  The Lady Eagles outhit their host 16-12 but committed three errors.  They stranded 10 baserunners and lost four on the bases.

Kennett took the lead in the bottom of the first, taking a 2-0 advantage, it could have been worse.  Oran starter, Kaylee Payne, gave up a pair of hits, a walk, a hit batsman and an error but Kennett lost a pair of runners on the base paths.

The Eagles tied it in the third with consecutive one-out singles by Payne, Leah Cauble and Claire Ramsey followed by an RBI ground out by Jessie Long.

Kennett scored five of their own in the bottom half.

The first batter reached on an error, followed by a single. After an out, a double ended Payne's day in the circle.  Alyssa Spane came on in relief and she too had to deal with an error, a double and a single.

After three, it was 7-2 Kennett.

Oran got four of those runs back in the fourth.

Katelyn Streeter singled with one out but was forced at second on a ground ball hit by Rylee Boshell.  Taylor Lowes singled and Kennedi McVay walked to load the bases.  Payne followed with a double driving in Boshell and Lowes.  After Cauble was hit by a pitch,  Ramsey drove home McVay and Payne with a base hit.

Spane worked around a pair of singles to keep the game knotted.  A 6-3 (Payne to Ramsey) double play after the first hit helped.

The Lady Eagles wasted a two-out double by Samantha Welter in the sixth.

In the home half,  the Lady Indians used a one-out single followed by a double and an intentional walk to load the bases.   They followed those with a single and a ground out to take a two-run lead into the seventh.

Oran had a Boshell single, a ground out, a McVay walk and a double steal to get the tying run to second with only one out but couldn't get anything else.

Payne went the first two and 1/3.  She gave up five runs, only three earned,  she gave up four hits, while walking two and striking out one.  Spane ( 5-3) took the loss, going the final three and 2/3.  She was charged with four runs, two earned.  She gave up eight hits, one intentional walk and struck out one.

Payne was 4-5 on the day with three RBI.  Ramsey was 2-3 and also drove in three.  Long had the other run driven in.

Welter, Streeter, Boshell and Lowes all had two hits.

Coach Jim Eftink said, "Poor game planning on my part. Experimented a little too much against a very good team.  Our ladies showed a lot of spunk. Despite falling behind twice, they stood up and fought. Showed that they’re not going to lay down to anyone. They’re fighters.  The Kennett team is always a handful and they made some very big plays when they needed them.  There was a ball that Taylor hit early in the game that should have been a hit up the middle—but their shortstop made a gold glove diving play to not only field the ball but get up to throw for the out at first. We’ve got to make plays like that if we want to move forward!"

Oran fell to 12-5 and will travel to Bernie on Monday at 3 pm to face Puxico in the first round of the C1D3 tournament.
