Lady Eagles sweep Scott-Miss tourney

The Oran High School girls basketball teams traveled to Charleston last night to play in the championship games.  The junior varsity defeated Kelly 43-22 to claim its third-straight title.  The varsity won its fifth-straight crown by defeating Scott County Central by a final score of, 65-60.  All five of those wins have been over the Bravettes.

Last night, the younger team started slow and after a back and forth first period, Oran held an 11-10 lead, but the Lady Eagles outscored Kelly 23-5 during the middle two quarters and went on to the 21 point win.

Traci Hency led all scorers with 15.

Haley Webb had nine points, Hannah Boshell finished with eight, and Emma Priggel seven.  Taylor Hobbs had four, including a trey.

They were only 4 of 14 from the line for 28%.  They improved to 7-1 and will not play again until Feb. 10th when Woodland comes to town.

Coach Larry Boshell said, "It was nice to win the tournament with this group.  We had some foul trouble and Rylee out with injury but I felt the girls who came in stepped up and did a good job for us.  We are still learning and trying to improve every game.  We now have a whole week off as the next two games on our schedule, those teams only have a varsity, so hopefully when we get back on the court for game action February 10th there isn't too much rust"

The varsity used a run late in the first quarter to take a 22-13 lead into the second.  It was  36-27, Oran, at the break and 49-44 heading into the fourth.  But, The Bravettes went on a 6-0 run to start the final period over the first minute to take a 60-59 advantage.   The Lady Eagle deficit would grow to 55-51 but Oran closed the game by outscoring SCC 14-5, thanks in large part to freshman, Grace Davis who scored 9 of her 13 points in the fourth, including 7 of 10 from the line.

Kaylee Payne led the Eagles with 22 points, making 9 of 12 from the line and hitting a three-pointer.  She made all six of her free throw attempts in the third quarter.  Taylor Lowes put in 14 and hit four threes.  Davis added her 13, as Oran had three in double-digits.

Katie Webb had seven, Heather Gosche six, Hope Woodfin made a trey for her three points.

They were 17-24 from the line for70.8% after shooting just 36% on Monday against Delta.

Boshell said, ":  We had spurts where we looked very good like we were about to pull away but then we would have a defensive breakdown or a turnover or two and SCC took advantage.  They are well-coached and executed their offense in the second half.  The good thing is I think the girls know what we need to improve on and we are going to continue to work on those and hopefully continue to get better"

"I am very proud of this team for battling until the end.  We got down by four in the fourth quarter and we just kept playing hard and got the defensive stops and rebounds when we needed them and we knocked down free throws down the stretch.  We are getting closer to the district tournament and hopefully we are playing our best at that time," He added.
