Eagles win twice

The Oran High School boys basketball teams competed last night during the final evening of play of the 2020 Scott-Mississippi Conference tournament at Delta.  Both squads won convincingly.  The varsity avenged a one-point loss on the road a week and a half ago at Oak Ridge with an 89-57 rout of the Blue Jays to claim the third-place trophy.  Then the junior varsity defeated Scott City for the second time this season, this time the Eagles won by 26, 63-37.  Early in the season, Oran had won 52-35 on the road.

Last nights' varsity affair was back and forth early.  The Eagles trailed 12-11 halfway through the first period, but then outscored the Blue Jays 77-46 from there on and enjoyed a running clock most of the fourth period.

Every available Eagle put points on the board.

Langdon Scheeter led all scorers with 29, including 5 treys.  Ty Johnson finished with a double-double with 20 points and hit four from beyond the arc and 13 boards.  Cooper Priggel also hit four three-pointers and ended up with 14 points.  Tyson Goodale was the fourth Eagle in double-figures with 12 points.  Scheeter and Johnson led the team with seven assists apiece.

Samuel Shoemaker and Logan Rose each had four.  Rose went 4-4 from the line in the fourth.  Cameron "Big Dawg" Westrich had three points, Kaiden Massey had a field goal and Dane Shands rounded out the scoring with a free throw.

They were 6 of 11 from the line for 54.5%.  They were 20-32 from inside the arc for 62.5 % and 13 of 20 from beyond for 65%.

Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "I was very proud of our effort and energy. We went through a spell where we did not practice very well and it showed. We had a good week of practice and need to continue that effort in practice the rest of the year."

The varsity improved to 18-4 and will host Bloomfield on Tuesday for "Senior Night"

The junior varsity led Scott City 38-20 at halftime and cruised to the 26 point victory and claimed their second tournament title of the season to go along with the Advance JV tourney crown they picked up in mid-December.

Robby Menz led all scorers with 15 points and was 5-5 from the line.  Kolten Payne and Nick Romas each scored 11.  Payne hit one from beyond the arch.

Camdyn Triblett had six points.  Seth Cauble, Landon Cochran and Riley Schlosser had four apiece.  Diesel Cato and Noah Mitchem each hit a trey for their points.  Luke Peterson added a field goal.

They were 12-14 from the line for 85.7 percent and improved their record to 17-2.

Coach Joe Bickings said, "The energy and intensity we came out with during this game was one of the best we've had all year.  I was a little worried because I felt like we had one of our worst practices the day before. Scott City also came out and hit their first 3 or 4 shots but we were able to match them.  After that, our defense did a great job on the press and our offense moved and shared the ball really well.  It was a really good win for us and I am proud of the kids.  Now we have to move on and prepare for Bloomfield on Tuesday night."

Oran host Bloomfield on Tuesday at 6 pm.  It is Senior Night.
