Eagles Take Two

Layne Johnson pitches in game 2.
The Oran Eagles baseball team picked up two victories today with wins over New Madrid County Central and Campbell.

Game 1:  The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning thanks to three NMCC errors and held on to win 4-3.

Hunter Schlosser picked up his first win on the mound, as well as the Bank of Advance star of the game, and Thomas Trankler picked up his first save for Oran who scored a third unearned run in the fourth inning.

The Eagles were cruising up 3-0 going into the sixth inning when they gave up three runs themselves with only one of them earned.  A walk, a single and a hit batsman, along with a sacrifice fly and a couple of errors allowed New Madrid to tie the game at three.

It wouldn't take long for Oran to reclaim the lead, however.

In the bottom of the sixth, Jacob Priggel led off the inning with a four-pitch walk, he stole second base and advanced to third when the catcher's throw ended up in center field.  Then with one out he trotted home after Drew Reischman turned on a pitch and drilled it down the line into the left field corner for a double and what proved to be the game winning rbi and the only earned run for either team in the contest.

After a lead off single to open the 7th inning allowed the tying run to reach base, Hunter Schlosser gave way to Thomas Trankler.

Trankler made things interesting by walking the number nine hitter with one down, but he followed that by getting a strike out and a ground ball back to the mound for the final out to help the Eagles to improve to 3-2.

Oran only managed three hits on the day, Reischman's double and singles by Thomas Trankler and Blake Overfield, but was helped by seven New Madrid errors and two walks.

Schlosser improved to 1-1 on the season and dropped his era from 13.36 to a more respectable 5.07.  On the day Schlosser went six innings allowing three runs, only one earned, on four hits.  He struck out four and walked two.

Trankler threw one inning, striking out two and walking one.  He improved his era to 2.94.

Game 2:  In the second game, Oran took on a Campbell Camels team that had blistered the ball against NMCC hurlers enroute to a 10-5 victory.

Oran's freshman Layne Johnson, however limited the Camels to no runs on just

two hits as the Eagles won a 10-0 mercy rule victory in five innings.  Johnson was also named the Bank of Advance star of the game.

Oran jumped on top in the bottom of the second inning as they exploded for six runs on six hits, three of which were doubles, and a hit batsman.  Freshmen Drew Reischman and Clay Sauceda hit back to back one out doubles to begin the onslaught.  Blake Overfield followed with an rbi single.  One out later, Tanner McVay singled and advanced to second on a throwing error.  Thomas Trankler was hit by a pitch.  A Preston Hahn single drove in McVay and moved Trankler to third.  Jacob Priggel drove in both Trankler and Hahn with a double to cap the scoring.

The Eagles plated two more in the third and once again it was Reischman starting things off, this time with a lead-off single.  He advanced to second when Clay Sauceda reached on an error and then scored on Ben Heuring's one out single.  Sauceda scored on the same play when Heuring, who was attempting to advance to second on the throw home, was safe after the throw down to second base landed in center.

In the third, with one out, Jacob Priggel hit his second double of the game. Hunter Schlosser was hit by a pitch.  Priggel moved to third after Reischman hit into a fielder's choice, forcing Schlosser at second.  Priggel crossed the plate after Sauceda reached on an error for the second consecutive inning.

The 10th run crossed after three straight singles in the bottom of the 5th by Heruing, McVay and Trankler.

Johnson (1-0) picked up the win by going five innings, he allowed only two hits. He walked four and struck out seven.  He improved his era from 7.64 to 3.23.

At the plate Oran collected 12 hits.  Priggel had two, both doubles, and two rbi. Reischman also had two hits including a double.  Ben Heuring had two hits and an rbi.  Tanner McVay also contributed two singles. Hahn had a base knock and two rbi.  Trankler, Sauceda and Overfield each contributed a hit and an rbi apiece.

With the victory, the Eagles improved to 4-2 and will take on the Woodland Cardinals on Monday at 4:30 pm in Marble Hill.
