Persistent rain showers almost made the field unplayable.
There was even a 54 minute rain delay.
But in the end the sun came out and the Eagles picked up their 14th win of the season in a laugher, 27-0 over the Richland Rebels in five innings during the opening round of the class 1 district 2 tournament in Oran. In the process freshman Layne Johnson hurled a perfect game. He allowed no Rebel to reach base. He struck out 12 and the other three grounded out.
Johnson, who was named the Bank of Advance star of the game because of his performance, improved his record to 5-0 and lowered his ERA to 2.53.
The Eagles provided Johnson with all the run support he would need in the first inning when they sent eight men to the plate and scored four runs.
After the rain delay in the top of the second Oran's bats came alive again as the pushed seven runs across. In both the third and fourth innings eight runs scored. The Eagles had a total of 21 hits and were aided by six Rebel errors, five walks, four hit batters and six wild pitches.
Leading the way at the plate was Clay Sauceda, who went 4-4 with six RBI including a home run. Jacob Priggel was also 4-4 with five RBI. He had a double and a triple.
Hunter Schlosser, Drew Reischman and Blake Overfield all had two hits for Oran.
The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow when they take on the Advance Hornets in a semi-final game at 4:00 pm.
Way to go Clay Sauceda
