The Oran High School baseball team traveled north to Sainte Genevieve yesterday morning to play games against the host Valle Catholic Warriors and the Dexter Bearcats. Oran lost both, 10-0 in six innings and then 14-12.
In game one against the 2-time defending class 2 state champions held their own until the 5th inning.
The Warriors scored 3 in the bottom of the first, but starter Layne Johnson was in control of the next three innings thanks in part to some solid Eagle defense.
A 1-2-3 second inning was followed by a lead-off double in the third, the next batter hit a fly by to Denver Elfrink in right field. The base runner tagged and headed toward third after the catch. A good throw to cut-off man Preston Hahn was followed by another good throw and then a catch and tag by third basemen Tanner McVay ended a 9-4-5 double play.
In the fourth inning, a 1 out hit batsmen was followed by a walk. The next batter hit a sharp ground ball up the middle just to the third base side of second. Shortstop Drew Reischman was able to snag the ball, step on second and throw to Austin Eftink at first to complete the second double play in as many innings.
The fifth belonged to Valle, though, as the sent 10 to the plate and scored 5 runs to increase the lead to 8-0.
In the 6th, the Warriors picked up 2 more to end the game via the mercy-rule.
Johnson went 4.1 and was saddled with the loss. He is now 1-1. He allowed 8 runs, all earned, on 8 hits. He walked 3, hit 2 and struck out 4. Preston Hahn went .2 of an inning, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned on 2 hits. He walked 2, hit 1 and struck out 1.
Coach Joe Bickings commented, "Valle is a really good hitting team up and down the lineup. Layne didn't have the command of his pitches the 1st inning and it showed with them scoring 3 runs. After that 1st inning, Layne pitched very well and was able to mix some pitches up and keep them off balance. He just ran out of gas and started to lose control of his pitches again."
At the plate, Oran only managed 2 hits. 1 each by Cole Priggel and Clay Sauceda. Sauceda also reached on a walk and Priggel reached on an error. The Eagles had no runner advance past second base.
Bickings said, "We didn't hit the ball very well and their pitcher had a lot to do with it, but I kind of expected that to happen because we hadn't seen live pitching other than BP for 9 days."
In game two, Oran jumped on top as 5 of the first six batters had hits.
Priggel led off with a single. One out later, Reischman drilled a pitch to the wall in right-center for an RBI triple. Sauceda, Overfield and McVay followed with singles and Johnson reached on a fielder's choice error before a double play ended the inning and the Eagles had scored 4.
In the bottom half, Dexter sandwiched 2 doubles between 3 strikeouts to score 1, the only earned run of the day for the Bearcats.
Oran added to its lead in the top of the second. Elfrink led off with a double, he advanced to third on a ground out by Priggel and then scored on single by Hahn. Hahn advanced to third after a balk and a passed ball. Reischman drove him home with a ground out to the shortstop. Sauceda reached on a two-base throwing error on the infield. Courtesy runner Jacob Shoemaker scored on McVay's second hit of the day.
It was 7-1 heading to the bottom of the second.
Reischman retired the first two he faced, but the 8 and 9 batters reached on singles. That was followed by an error that extended the inning and loaded the bases. A hit batter and a balk allowed 2 unearned runs and the lead was 7-3.
In the third the Eagles got 1 of those runs back.
Eftink led off with a single and Elfrink used the sac bunt to move him to second. Priggel singled to move Eftink to third. Priggel stole second base. Hahn then singled to drive in Eftink, but Priggel was thrown out at the plate.
The 8-3 score would stand until the bottom of the sixth.
Hahn came in to relieve Reischman in the sixth. He induced Dexter to hit back to back routine ground balls, but both were bobbled and the Bearcats had runners on 1st and 2nd with none out. The next ground ball was converted in the first out as the runners advanced 90 feet. The next batter hit a fly ball that was dropped scoring the a run. That was followed by 2 walks and Hahn gave way to Sauceda.
Sauceda gave up 5 singles and 2 walks before recording a strike out for the 2nd out of the inning, another single followed. Blake Overfield then took the mound, enticing a ground out to finally end the inning. Dexter sent 16 batters to the plate, collecting 6 hits and benefiting from 4 walks and 3 Oran errors.
After 6, the Eagles trailed 14-8.
Oran refused to give up however, Overfield and McVay singled to start the seventh. Shoemaker, who had entered the line up during last pitching change, walked to load the bases. After a Bearcat pitching change, Eftink grounded out to drive in a run, and advance the other two runners. Elfrink hit a sacrifice fly to left to drive in McVay. The Eagles had scored two but now two were out and they still trailed by four.
Priggel single to move Shoemaker to third. Hahn singled to drive in Shoemaker and after a Reischman single drove in Priggel, Oran trailed by only 2 with the tying run on base. However, a well hit line drive to center was caught and the rally fell short.
Bickings told the blog, "In the Dexter game the wheels just fell off in that 6th inning. The game was a tough one to swallow because all of the wounds were self inflicted. If you commit four errors and a walk to start an inning, you are asking for trouble and we got it. Other than that one inning, I felt like we swung the bats very well and played a good game. It was nice to see that our team didn't lay down and quit. We just have to be more mentally tough as a team and not let one thing turn into a snowball effect. We have to limit the damage."
Sauceda was charged with the loss, going .1 of an inning, giving up 6 runs, all unearned, on 6 hits, 3 walks, 2 strike outs and a wild pitch.
The starter, Reischman, went 5 innings gave up 3 runs, only 1 earned. He gave up 5 hits, walked 1, hit 2 and struck out 6. He was also charged with a wild pitch and a balk. Hahn went .1 and allowed 5 runs, none earned. He walked 2 and had a wild pitch. Overfield went .1 and retired the only batter he faced.
The Eagles outhit the Bearcats 19-11 for the game.
Priggel led the way, going 4 for 5, scored 2 runs and had a stolen base.
Hahn, Sauceda and McVay each picked up 3 hits. Hahn and Sauceda were 3-5, while McVay was 3-4. Hahn had 3 rbi, McVay 2 and Sauceda 1.
Reischman picked up 2 hits including the triple, going 2-5 and drove in 3 runs. Overfield was 2-3 with a walk and a sacrifice and scored twice.
Shoemaker scored 3 runs, 2 as a courtesy runner for Sauceda.
Oran is now 1-3 on the season and are scheduled to play at Oak Ridge tomorrow at 4:30 pm.
