Eagles split on opening day

The Oran High School baseball team opened it's season yesterday splitting two games in Malden.  The Eagles defeated the host Green Wave 17-2 in 5 innings but fell to the Caurthersville Tigers 9-4 in eight innings in game 2.

Oran scored early and often against Malden.

In the first inning the Eagles combined 4 hits along with 3 defensive errors to bat around and spotted starting pitcher Layne Johnson to a 4-0 lead.

That run support was more than enough as Johnson had a shut-out working with two-outs in fifth, before a two-run double gave Malden it's only runs of the game.

In between, Oran scored in every inning except the 5th.  In the third, they sent 12 to the plate and scored 7.

The Eagles pounded four Green Wave hurlers for 13 earned runs on 13 hits.  Oran also feasted on the base paths, stealing a total of 8 bases during the game.

Blake Overfield went 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 2 driven in.  Clay Sauceda was 2 for 3 with 4 runs batted in and his courtesy runner, Jacob Shoemaker scored 3 times.  Austin Eftink also had 2 hits in 3 at bats and drove in 2, while scoring once.  Cole Priggel and Preston Hahn both added 2 hits, 3 runs and an RBI.

Johnson picked up the win allowing on the 2 earned runs on 3 hits.  He struck out 9 and walked 4.  He was named the Bank of Advance Star of the Game.

Game two saw Oran squander a late lead.

The Eagles took the lead in the first after an error and an RBI double by Drew Reischman and that lead held up until the fifth inning as Reischman, who got the start on the mound, was able to work out of trouble time and time again.  In the fifth inning though, Caruthersville used a walk, stolen base, error and a wild pitch to score an unearned run of their own to tie the game.

Preston Hahn came into pitch and got a 1-2-3 sixth and Oran responded with 2 unearned runs of their own to take a 3-1 lead into the 7th.

The Tigers, however sent 8 men to the plate in their half, the first 5 reached and 3 scored to grab the lead 4-3 heading to bottom of the seventh.

The Eagles refused to give up.  With one out, Austin Eftink singled to shallow left.  Jacob Shoemaker came in to pinch run and advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch.  Denver Elfrink beat out a sacrifice bunt for an infield single to move Shoemaker over to third .  Cole Priggel then laid down a perfect squeeze bunt, that he also beat out to drive in Shoemaker to tie the game at four.  After a ground out, and an intentional pass to Reischman, Oran had the bases loaded with two outs but could not push the winning run across.

In the top of the eighth, the wheels fell off for the Eagles.

Caruthersville scored 5 runs off 3 hits, a walk and a hit batter plus 3 Oran errors as they sent 10 to the plate.

The Eagles went down in order in the bottom of the eighth.

Reischman was the only Eagle to have more than one hit.  He was 2-3 with a run and an RBI.

On the mound, he went five giving up only 1 unearned run, on 3 hits, he struck out 7 and walked 2.   He hit 3 batters. He was named the Bank of Advance Star of the Game.

Hahn went 3 innings in relief and was saddled with the loss.  He allowed 8 runs, 5 earned, on 4 hits and hit 1 batter.  He struck out 2 and walked 4.

Oran will be back in action on Thursday when they host rival and district foe Advance at 4:30 pm.
