Eagles surprise Sikeston

The Oran High School baseball team picked up a win over the class 5 Sikeston Bulldogs on the road  yesterday by a final score of 7-2.

The Eagles scored first and never trailed in beating the Bulldogs for the first time in recent memory.

After Drew Reischman singled and was out on Cole Priggel's fielder's choice, Preston Hahn singled.  that was followed by Clay Sauceda's RBI single and a two out RBI by Layne Johnson.

Oran picked up a third run in the second.

Tanner McVay stroked a lead off double down the third base line. and after Drew Mitchem reached on a dropped third strike.  Austin Eftink laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners.  Reischman then hit an RBI ground out to the second baseman and the Eagles were up 3-0.

Meanwhile, starting pitcher Preston Hahn, allowed only three baserunners through the first three innings.  A two out error reached in the first and a two out hit batter was followed by a single in the third.

Sikeston finally scored a run in the fourth, and it could have been much worse.  The first three Bulldogs singled to load the bases, but McVay fielded a bounding ground ball behind the base at third.  He stepped on the base and fired to first to turn the double play.  A run scored but the next batter lined out to Reischman at short to end the threat.

Oran scored two more in the sixth to make it 5-1.

Eftink singled to start the inning.  He advanced a base on Reischman's second hit of the day.  After a pitching change, Priggel was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Hahn drove in one with a single to right.  Then with one out, Blake Overfield also singled to right to drive in the second.

Sikeston would score their final tally in the sixth.

After two were out, a single was followed by an RBI double. That led to an Eagle pitching change and Layne Johnson came in to attempt his second save in as many days.  He induced the first batter he saw to fly out to right to end the inning.

Oran would add two insurance runs in the seventh.

A walk to Mitchem was followed  by another sac bunt by Eftink.  Reischman was hit by a pitch and Priggel legged out an infield single to load the bases.  Hahn grounded out to second driving in Mitchem and then Sauceda drove in the final run with a base hit to left.

Johnson set Sikeston down in order in the seventh by striking out the side.

Hahn improved to 4-2.  He went 5 2/3, allowing only 2 runs, both earned, on 7 hits.  He struck out one and more importantly walked none.  He did hit one batter.

Johnson picked up save number 3, going the final inning and a third.  He reitired all four he faced, striking out three.

Not only did Hahn pick up the win but he was also 2-5 at the plate and had 2 RBI.  Sauceda was 2 for 3 and also had 2 runs driven in.  Reischman was 2-4.

McVay's double was the only Eagle extra base hit

Oran improved  to 11-8.

They will be back in action on Monday when they host district rival Bell City at 4:30 pm.
