2016-17 Girls Basketball Preview

The Oran High School girls basketball program has won three straight district championships in class 1.  If they win a fourth it will be a step up in class 2.  Enrollment at Oran has increased enough to move the hoops programs up a notch into the next higher division.

The Eagles will start that road toward a four-peat on Tuesday when they participate in a four-team, pre-season jamboree at Charleston.  Here is that schedule:

Oran's roster features 13 players.  There is only 1 senior, Brianna Stause and 1 junior, Kenzie Graviett.  The sophomore class has 5 and the freshmen have 6 playing.

The Eagles will have the core of their offense returning from a team that won 21 games last year.

As a freshman, Leah Cauble garnered all-state honors and led the team in scoring at 25.5 pts/gm.  Stause led the team in 3 point field goals with 54, while Jessie Long, also only a freshman last year, scored 9.9 per game and was the top rebounder at 7.7 per contest.

Head coach Ethan Evan, who has compiled a 55-21 season at the helm, told the blog, "I would be lying if I said I didn’t have high hopes for the upcoming season. On the varsity side, we return 3 starters and our 6th man who also started some last year. Our biggest strength will be quickness and shooting. One of our weaknesses could be rebounding since we don’t have a ton of size. We only have  13 girls out so we will have some that will have to play JV and varsity quite a bit. I look for the JV to also have a good season this year. We have some young talent that will have a chance to develop on the JV and maybe help us later on in the year."
