Eagles take 2 from SCC

The Oran High School girls basketball teams picked up their second victories in as many nights, last night, as they swept conference foe Scott County Central, 28-25 in junior varsity action and 80-64 in the varsity game.

There almost wasn't a jv game but finally, it was decided to play two quarters.  Oran jumped out 16-6 after the first but had to hang on late for the 3 point win.

Coach Ethan Evans said, "I thought we played a very good 1st quarter both on the offensive and defensive ends. In the 2nd quarter our defensive effort was not the same but we did enough to hold on to the lead. Overall it was a nice defensive effort."

Katelyn Streeter led the way with 15 points.  Savannah Below scored 5, including a 3-pointer.  Taylor Lowes and Madison Ramsey both hit a trey for their points. Heather Gosche added a field goal.  Paige Bradley played but did not score.

The younger Eagles were only 1 of 6 from the line for 17%.  They improved to 1-0 in the Scott-Miss and 2-0 overall.  They will not play again until December 12th when New Madrid County Central comes to town.

In the nightcap, Scott County Central came in with a game plan designed to reduce the effects of the Oran press and pressure Leah Cauble from end line to end line.  It worked, for a while.

After one quarter of play, the visitors were up 17 to 11, but Cauble still managed 9, in a foul-filled 8 minutes that saw 17 personals called and 16 free throws taken.

The Eagles slowly got back into the game and with just over 4 minutes before halftime, took their first lead of the night at 23-22.  At the break they were up by 4, 34-30.

In quarter three, Oran was able to expand the lead up to 17 midway through, 51-34, thanks to increased defensive pressure.  After the 3rd it was 56-40 and it looked like the game was all but over.

The Bravettes refused to quit however and with 4:43 remaining the lead had been sliced to 5, 61-56.  The Eagles, however, would outscore SCC 13-3 over the next 2:40 to put the game away.

Cauble, who only in the last 24 hours not only scored 45 points at Malden but also got her driver's license, put in 39 against Scott County.  She hit 1 trey, was 12 of 15 from the line, had 10 rebounds and 5 assists.  Jessie Long had another double-double with 19 points and 17 rebounds.  She hit 5 of 6 free throws and also added 3 steals.

Kaylee Payne scored 7, had 4 rebounds and 3 steals before fouling out.  Brianna Stause and Kenzie Graviett both added 6.  Stause hit 2 from beyond the arc.  Graviett hit both of her free throw attempts. Claire Ramsey hit a three-pointer before she picked up her 5th foul.  Streeter added a couple of assists off the bench.

Oran hit 50% from inside the arc (24-48) but once again struggled mightily from beyond, hitting only 4 of 26 for a 15.4% clip.  At the free throw line they hit 69%, 20-29, including a perfect 9-9 during the fourth quarter.

They too, improve to 1-0 and 2-0.

Coach Evans said, "Once again we got off to a slow start before we picked it up in the 2nd quarter. Our press wasn't effective but our defense did a good job in the middle 2 quarters. The offense picked it up over the last 3 quarters but we have to get off to a better start."

The varsity will next participate in the Lady Devil Invitational at Chaffee  starting on Monday, Dec. 5 at 5 pm.  They are the #1 seed and will face Scott City, the #8 Seed.
