What's happenin' (2/13-2/18)
It's a transition week for Oran Eagles basketball. The regular season will come to a conclusion and the post-season begins for both the boys and the girls.
The varsity girls enter the week 20-2 overall and 6-0 in the conference. The junior varsity is 7-1 and finished league play at 3-1. The older boys are 15-8 and finished 5-2 in the S-MC. The JV stands at 6-9 and ended up 4-2 in the conference.
Both varsity squads garnered the number 1 seeds in their respective district brackets, but more on that later.
Monday will see the girls travel to Perryville to take on the St. Vincent Indians. The Indians, a district opponent and tournament host, are currently 14-8. The Eagles won the previous meeting that took place during the Delta New Year's Tournament 65-33.
On Tuesday, the boys will end their regular season against former district rival Advance. The Hornets are currently 20-5 and are the 6th ranked class 1 team in the latest coaches' poll. It is also "Lil Cheer Night" so plan on arriving early if you want your regular seat.
The girls return to action on Wednesday as they will travel to Dexter. The Lady Bearcats, a team that Oran added this year to beef up its schedule, come in the week at 14-8. It will be the final junior varsity game of the season.
And on Thursday, the girls will finish their regular season when they host conference foe, Scott City in a varsity only match-up. The Rams are 1-18 and the Eagles have won the two previous contests this season by scores of 97-25 and 95-15. There will also be a presentation to Leah Cauble, honoring her for surpassing the 1000 point plateau earlier this season.
The postseason starts on Saturday and both the boys and the girls are the number one seeds for the tournaments that will be held at the Perry Park Center (click here for directions).
The boys will play at 1:45 and take on the 8th seeded Kingston Cougars. The Cougars are 6-17 on the year and to my knowledge, these two teams have never met before and they have played no common opponents this season.
The girls will face a very familiar opponent to open its bracket at 3 pm. They will have their 4th meeting of the year with Scott City.
The tournament brackets are posted HERE.
