The Oran Junior High School girls basketball teams experienced the bitter taste of defeat for the first time this season when both teams dropped decisions to Cape Girardeau Central last night. The seventh-grade fell 50-38. The eighth-grade lost 23-13.
Coach Ethan Evans said, "I was proud of the fight the seventh-grade put up last night. After we got down big early we could've given up but the girls clawed their way back to make a game of it."
The Eagles were behind 20-6 after one and 32-16 at the break but cut the deficit to only eight, 38-30 heading into the final frame, but could get no closer.
Grace Davis had 14 in the first contest for Oran. Addie Nichols scored seven. Liza Dannenmuller, Hallie Nichols and Emma Priggel added four apiece. Maddie Stickel had three and Bralynn Morgan rounded out the scoring with two.
They were 6 of 12 from the line for 50%.
Neither eighth-grade squad had much success on the offensive end.
The Eagles led 5-4 after the first period but trailed 10-8 at the half.
After the break, Oran would score only five more points and would be shut out during the final quarter.
Coach Evans said, "We just couldn't throw the ball in the ocean. Our defense kept us in the game but every time I thought we were taking a step forward we would take a couple back. Hopefully, we learn from this game and get back on track going forward."
Rylee Boshell scored six to lead the Eagles. Hope Woodfin and Davis scored three each. Woodfin hit a trey and Davis' all came from the line. Priggel also added a free throw.
Oran hit 4 of 9 from the charity stripe for 44%.
Both teams will be back in action for their regular season finale tonight at home vs Delta at 6 pm.
