The Oran Junior High School girls basketball teams picked up two wins last night as they opened their season at home against conference rival Chaffee. Oran kept their opponent to single digits in both games.
The seventh-grade won, 43-8, while the eighth grade prevailed, 50-7.
In the opener, Braylen Morgan scored 10 of her game-high 19 points during the first period, as the Eagles soared out to a 14-2 lead and never looked back enrout to a 35 point victory and enjoyed a running clock for most of the final quarter.
Morgan had two three-pointers included in her total, during three quarters of action. Addie Nichols had 17 in only two quarters. She had 13 in the third period, including a trey.
Scarlett Schlosser had three points. Lilly Knotts and Molly Spane chipped in two apiece.
They were four for eleven from the line for 36%.
The eighth-grade contest saw Oran toss a shutout until there were only 33 seconds left in the first half. By then the Lady Eagles were up 34-2. It was 35-2 at the intermission. At times during the second quarter, Oran had only seventh-graders on the court.
The margin continued to grow during the second half to the final 43 points. Once again, there were no eighth-graders on the court for extended periods.
Grace Davis led all scorers with 28 points. Nichols put in 10 in her time playing up.
Emma Priggel, Laney Shy and Maddie Stickel added four points each.
The older girls hit four of nine from the line good for 44%.
Coach Ethan Evans said, "I thought both teams played extremely well on the defensive end. We got out in the passing lanes and that resulted in some easy buckets. Rebounding was pretty good and our guards had really good court vision. Overall it was a great start to the season."
The teams will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Scott City to take on the Lady Rams in another conference matchup. Tip time is 6 pm.
