The Oran High School girls basketball team had their season end on Saturday in the quarterfinal round of the state tournament as they lost to the top-ranked team in class 2, Thayer, 58-28 in Poplar Bluff at the Libla Family Event Center.
Oran fell behind 15-8 after one. They maintained a seven point deficit at the half 24-17. But the Lady Eagles were outscored 34-11 over the final 16 minutes and briefly endured a running clock in the fourth. It was the second year in a row that the girls fell one game short of the final four.
Coach Ethan Evans said, "This was definitely not the way I envisioned our season ending. We didn’t come out in the second half with the urgency we needed and I’ll take all the blame for that. It was really tough to say goodbye to the seniors after the game. They have been the heart and soul of this program and they will be sorely missed."
They will graduate five.
Leah Cauble, who was the teams' leading scorer with 15. She hit a trey and was 4-5 from the line and grabbed seven rebounds.
Jessie Long had two points.
Katelyn Streeter, Claire and Madison Ramsey played but did not score.
All five will be missed.
Katie Webb had six points, was 4-4 from the line and had a team-high 11 boards. Kaylee Payne rounded out the scoring with five. She hit one from beyond the arc.
They were 7-24 from inside the arc for 29% and 2 of 17 from beyond for 12%. The made 89% of their free throws hitting 8 of 9.
They finished with a 22-7 mark.
