baseball loses to Cooter

The Oran High School baseball team hosted the Cooter Wildcats yesterday.  In the two most recent meeting Cooter was 2-0 with both being mercy-rule wins.  The most recent contest looked like it might be the third in a row as the visitors scored four in the top of the first.  The Eagles kept it close but lost none the less, 5-2.

Carter Heuring (0-1)got the start.  He went one-third of an inning. He gave up four runss, only two were earned.  He allowed two hits and walked two.  Connor Kern went four and two-thirds shut out innings, allowing only one hit and struck out three.  Kaden Hargrove went the final two and allowed one unearned run on one hit, one walk and strking out one.

Heuring was the only Eagle with two hits."K"ole Simms had the only extra-base hit, a double.  Todd Priggel and Kolten Payne each had an RBI.

Coach Joe Bickings sadi, "Before the game yesterday I mentioned that we have to play fundamental baseball to be able to win the game.  We weren't able to do that in the innings they scored.  The things that have hurt us so far in the 3 games we have lost are walks and errors.  Against good teams, you can't give them free bases and extra outs.  This was Carter's first start I think since last fall because he has had arm issues.  We needed to get him some innings in because we feel like he can contribute on the mound for us in the spring.  The good thing about Carter is that he didn't let his poor pitching outing affect his hitting.  The positives for this game was that we got a very good outing by Connor Kern.  That was the best he's pitched and had all three of his pitching working.  We also didn't give up after we gave up 4 runs in the 1st inning.  We were able to get 1 run back and get runners on base.  We had a few opportunities later in the game to get things going for us but we just couldn't come through."

The Eagles had the potential go-ahead run on base in the sixth, but couldn't keep the inning going.

Oran fell to 8-3 with the loss and will host Campbell on Friday at 4:30.
