Eagles split with Blue Jays

The Oran High School boys basketball teams traveled to Oak Ridge for a pair of conference games.  The junior varsity won a nail-biter 46-44 and the varsity lost 61-60.

In the opener, the Eagles trailed at the half 27-25 and it was knotted at 35 heading into the fourth. With time winding down is was 44-44 and Oran missed a shot and Oak Ridge grabbed the rebound, but Diesel Cato intercepted a pass and tossed it to Kolten Payne in the lane, who shoveled it to a wide-open Seth Cauble who put it in as the buzzer sounded.

Cauble led all scorers with 17, including two treys.

Payne had nine points.  Nick Romas scored eight.  Cato and Robby Menz each had four and Luke Peterson and Camdyn Triblett both added a field goal.

They were 6 of 13 from the line for 46.1%.

Oran improved to 6-0 and 13-2.

Coach Joe Bickings said, "We were very fortunate to come out with a win last night against Oak Ridge.  I felt like we didn't play very smart basketball towards the end.  We keep making the same mistakes that put us in bad situations and we can't do that, especially towards the end of the game when we are winning.  We got down fairly early and we were able to battle back to get it close in the 1st quarter.  We were then able to win each quarter from there.  It was a physical game and a good test for our jv team.  We need to be happy that we came out with a win against Oak Ridge at Oak Ridge but we can't be satisfied."

In the nightcap, Oran trailed 30-28 at the half and 48-47 heading into the final frame.  The Eagles were up 60-59 when Oak Ridge scored with 8 seconds left.  An Oran turnover gave the Blue Jays the ball with 6 ticks remaining.  A missed front end of a one and one gave the Eagles a chance on a desperation heave but it was off the mark and the Eagles fell by one.

Ty Johnson led all scorers with 23, including two three-pointers.  Johnson had a double-double with 14 boards and had a team-high four assists as well.  Cooper Priggel had 21 while knocking down six treys. Langdon Scheeter also reached double figures with 10.

Tyson Goodale, Dane Shands and Samuel Shoemaker put in one field goal apiece.

They were 6 of 10 from the line, they made 22 of 55  for 40% from inside the arc and 7 of 19 from beyond for 36.8%  and saw their record fall to 4-2 and 13-3.

Each team had 34 rebounds.  Oran had 12 turnovers, Oak Ridge committed eight.

Coach Joe Shoemaker said, ''I didn't have the team prepared to play and Oak Ridge took advantage and squeaked out a win."

The boys will be back in action on Friday when Leopold comes to town for the 2020 Homecoming game that begins at 6 pm.
