Eagles split in semis

The Oran High School boys basketball teams played in the semi-final rounds of the Scott-Mississippi Conference tournament last night.  The junior varsity won 58-41 over Oak Ridge.  The varsity fell to Kelly in overtime 57-56.

In the opener, it was a rematch of a game played a week ago, in which the Eagles had won on a buzzer-beater.  This game, however, Oran went from three down after one 11-8 to up eight at the half, 30-22.  The Eagles outscored the Blue Jays 28-19 in the second half to pick up the 17 point win and advance into Friday's Championship game against Scott City.  The game, at Delta, is scheduled for 6:30 pm.

Robbie Menz led all scorers with 19, including a pair of treys.  Kolten Payne scored 13 with three threes.

Diesel Cato scored eight.  Landon Cochran had five, including a three-pointer.  Luke Peterson and Camdyn Triblett had four apiece.  Riley Schlosser had three and Seth Cauble two.

They were 8-12 from the line and improved to 16-2.

Coach Joe Bickings said, "Not a bad game for us against Oak Ridge.  I thought we were a little shell shocked in the first quarter when they came out in a box and 1 on Seth.  We had some people step up when they did that and those were Kolten[Payne] (13pts) and Robby [Menz] (19 pts).  I thought Diesel[Cato] helped out a lot in the 2nd half after getting into foul trouble early in the 1st half and having to sit because of it.  It was a good win and now we get to play for a Scott-Miss Conference Championship.  We play Scott City and they are going to come out and try to avenge the loss from earlier in the season.  It's going to be a dogfight. "

The varsity contest was tight throughout.  Oran trailed 10-8 after one but led 24-16 at the break.  The Eagles maintained a 34-31 lead heading into the fourth.  It took an off-balance three-point shot by Ty Johnson from to the right of the top of the key just before the buzzer to tie the game at 50 to force overtime.

The Eagles had a shot at the end of overtime but it was off the mark.

The most glaring statistic is that Oran only hit 5 of 13 free throws for 38.4%.  They were 21 of 43 from inside the arc for 48.8% and from beyond, 3 of 16 for 18.8%.

'Tyson Goodale's double-double led the Eagles with 20 points and 11 boards.  Ty Johnson had 11 points, including a trey and a team-high three assists. Langdon Scheeter also had 11 points.   Cooper Priggel had two three-pointers as a part of his 10 points.

Samuel Shoemaker rounded out the Eagle scoring with four points.

They fell to 17-4 and will play Oak Ridge for third place at 5:15 Friday.

Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "I thought the boys played hard and never quit.  We have a few small things that we need to improve on in practice.  I think we took a big step forward in practice Monday and we have to continue to move forward each and every day if we want to be successful in postseason play."
