Eagles Romp Over Wildcats

The Oran Eagles high school basketball teams won both of their contests by large margins tonight over the Leopold Wildcats.

Varsity Action:  The last three times these two teams met the games have gone right down to the wire.  All three finals were decided by two points.  Last year the Eagles claimed the victory, but the other two were won by the Wildcats. Well, that streak no longer exists as Oran rolled to a 73-43 lopsided win.

The Eagles held a slim 9-8 lead about half way through the initial period when Leopold took a time out.  After that Oran went on a 13-3 run to close out the quarter up 22-11. Thomas Trankler scored 14 of his game-high 22 points in the opening eight minutes.  The lead was 38-20 at the half.

If there was any drama over the eventual outcome it was quickly erased in the 3rd period as Oran stretched it's lead to 31 (52-21) at the 5:28 mark. The lead hovered around 30 points the rest of the way.

Besides Trankler, the Eagles other top offensive performers were Jacob Priggel with 16 and Jason Bennett added 10.

Trankler also had 10 steals and eight assists.  Bennett grabbed seven rebounds.

Oran is now 15-6.

Junior Varsity Action:  There was never any doubt about who would come out on top the opening match-up. Oran controlled the tip and promptly committed a turnover but forced a Wildcat turnover before Leopold could get back to half court.  The Eagles scored and scored and scored...  In fact, Oran was up 27-0 with 2:30 left in the first before the Wildcats got on the board.  It was 29-7 after one and the only question was how big the final margin of victory would be.

The Eagles led 41-12 at the half on their way to a 67-20 blow out.

Cole Priggel led Oran, now 9-6, with 24 points.  Layne Johnson scored 11 while Bradley Brooks chipped in 9.

Upcoming Action:  The Eagle varsity team will next see action on Tuesday in Chaffee as they take on the conference foe after a varsity girls game that is slated for a 6 pm tip-off.
