JHBB: Eagles Race past Rams

The Oran Junior High School boys basketball teams improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in Scott-Miss Conference play with a pair of big wins over the visiting Scott City Rams last night.  The 7th grade won 54-31 and the 8th grade 55-25.

In the first game, the Eagles jumped out early thanks in large part to a stifling full-court press. Oran led 19-0 after the first quarter.  Scott City finally scored about half way through the second period. At the half the lead was 27-9.  The lead expanded to 44-21 after the third.

Ty Johnson scored 25 points to lead all scorers.  He hit one from beyond the arc and was 6 of 9 from the free throw line.  Dane Shands hit 6 field goals and made his only free throw attempt for 13 points.

Drew Smith had 7 points, including a trey, and was 2 for 2 from the line.  Kaden Hargrove recorded 6 and Kaleb Gosche chipped in 3.

Head coach Joe Shoemaker, "It was Scott City's first game of the year and I think it showed in the early part of the 7th grade game as we jumped out to an early lead.  I thought our guys did a good job of starting with focus and we showed improvement in our free throw percentage."

As a team, Oran was 12 for 20 at the stripe for 60%.

In game two, the Eagles and the Rams were tied at 8 about 3 minutes into the game.  After a time out by Coach Shoemaker, Oran went on to outscore the visitors 10-2 the rest of the quarter and 16-6 heading into the half for a 24-14 lead at the intermission.

" I thought the 8th grade did a good job of making adjustments.  We made 2 adjustments specifically that I felt made a big difference.  First, early in the 1st quarter we made an adjustment with our press because of how Scott City was attacking our press.  Unfortunately we got into a little foul trouble in the 2nd quarter and decided not to press as much until the early part of the second half.  We also made an adjustment to how we were going to attack their half court 1-2-2 zone at half time.  I thought the boys did a great job of making these adjustments on the floor," said Shoemaker.

The Eagles put the game away in the third quarter by outscoring Scott City 22-4, for a 46-18 margin.

"We didn't give up any layups against the press in the 3rd quarter and had several steals.  They also did a good job with the half court offensive adjustment which led to several wide open shots that we were able to knock down."

"As always, we have also spotted some areas to work on improving in our next practice on Friday and hopefully we will see some of this improvement in the next game," Shoemaker added.

Todd Priggel led all scorers with 21 including a 3 pointer.  Landon Stanberry netted 10.

Tyson Goodale had 8, Gabe Fox and Jakob Findley each added 6 while Kaiden Massey chipped in 4.

The older team hit 46% from the line going 6 of 13.

The Eagles will be back in action on Monday when they host Kelly in a 6 pm conference match-up.
