Eagles eek out wins over Red Devils

The Oran High School girls basketball teams managed to pick up two wins over visiting conference foe Chaffee last night.  The varsity, despite a slow start and a 16 point third quarter deficit, won 50-45.  The junior varsity scored first but didn't lead again until 3:16 left in their two-quarter contest.  The jv was victorious 25-19.

The night started with varsity action, which apparently was not conducive to offense, as neither team scored for the first 4:04.  The Eagles took a 3-0 lead.  The Red Devils took their first lead 5-3, with 1:21 left in the first.  After one, Chaffee was up 7-6.

By half-time Oran was down, 26-14.

Chaffee scored first out of the break, to lead 28-14.  They were up 32-16 with about 6 minutes left in the third, when momentum suddenly changed, thanks in large part to the defensive play of Ashlyn McIntosh.  The senior forced two turnovers in a row.  The Eagles scored two quick buckets, upped the tempo and got the crowd back into the game and forced the Devils into a time-out with the score now 32-20 with the clock at 5:14.

The run continued, however, and with 1:52 left in the period, Oran was down one 32-31.  It was 37-33 after the third with Chaffee still on top.

Finally, at the 6:29 mark, the Eagles tied the game at 37 and with 5:24 remaining Oran led for the first time since the first quarter 38-37.  With 4:33 left the Eagles lead was up to 4, 41-37.  Chaffee tied the game again with 2:04 on the clock 43 all.  It was tied again at 45 with 1:38 left but Oran scored the last 5 points including 3 of 4 from the line to complete the comeback.

Coach Ethan Evans told the blog, "Obviously I was disappointed by the way we played in the 1st half. We were outworked on the boards and Chaffee got every loose ball. We have to come out of the gate with more intensity. The girls responded well in the 2nd half and finally started playing the way this team is capable of."

Leah Cauble led all scorers with 18, she hit 1 trey and was 3 of 4 at the free throw line.  McIntosh hit for 13, she too hit one from beyond the arc and was 4 of 4 from the line.  She also grabbed 8 rebounds.

Brianna Stause had 9 points with 2 from beyond the arc.  Jessie Long had 8 points and snagged a team leading 11 boards.  Claire Ramsey rounded out the scoring with 2 points.

Hannah Scherer, Shiloh Kirn and MacKenzie Graviett saw the floor for the Eagles who improved their record to 3-0 in Scott-Miss play and 15-3 overall.

As a team, the varsity hit only 38% from inside the arc (14-37) and 14% from three (4-28).  The did hit 10-14 from the line for 71%.

Junior Varsity:

Chaffee scored first during the jv contest before Madison Ramsey hit a three with about 5 minutes left in the initial period, but the Devils took a 10-6 lead into the final frame.

At the 3:16 mark, Oran reclaimed the lead on a Katelyn Streeter lay up, 18-17.  The Eagles controlled the last 3 minutes to take the 6 point win, 25-19.

Streeter led the team with 8 points.  Madison Graviett added 7, all in the final period.  Ramsey had 6 on 2 three-pointers. MacKenzie Graviett tallied 3 and Megan Henson hit a free throw for her point.

Oran hit 5 of 9 from the charity stripe for 56%.

Coach Evans had this to say, "This group of girls seems to get a little better each time they take the floor. They are becoming more comfortable in their roles and are improving every day. I was proud of their effort."

The junior varsity Eagles also improved to 3-0 in conference and 6-3 in all games.

The girls will return to action on Thursday when they host conference foe Kelly at 6 pm.
