Eagles pound Panthers

The Oran High School girls basketball teams picked up two convincing road wins last night at Meadow Heights High School, although neither game started out that way.

The varisty girls led only 18-17 after one period against a winless Panther team.

Head Coach Ethan Evans told the blog, "Our defensive effort was not very good during the 1st quarter so we switched to full court man to man to hold everyone accountable for who they were supposed to be guarding."

And after that it was all Eagles, as Oran out-scored their hosts 28-7 to take a 46-24 lead into the intermission.

It was more of the same in the second half as the Eagles took the third, 20-6 and the fourth, 13-1, for a turbo-clock 79-31 victory.

Leah Cauble poured in 38 points, she hit 5 from beyond the arc and 9 of 11 from the free throw line.

Ashlyn McIntosh added 9 points.  She also had 9 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals.  Jessie Long and Brianna Stause both chipped in 8.  Stause hit 2 treys.  Claire Ramsey scored 5.  MacKenzie Graviett tallied 3.  Shiloh Kirn, Tatum May, Hannah Scherer and Katelyn Streeter had a bucket apiece.  May was injured during the first half and did not return.  She is expected back next week.

Oran hit 21 of 42 from inside the arc for 50%, from beyond the were 7 for 18 (38.9%).  From the free throw line they hit 61.5 (16-26).

The older girls improved to 14-3 on the season.

Junior varsity:

The younger girls looked to be in trouble during the first half of the opening game.  After leading by one, 10-9 after the first quarter, they trailed by two 18-16 at the half.

Coach Evans said, "After a slow 1st half we decided to pick up the pace and press at the start of the 3rd quarter and it made a huge difference. The girls really got after it during the 2nd half and started attacking the goal, especially the 3rd quarter."

During that 3rd quarter, MacKenzie Graviett scored 10 of her 15 points, as the Eagles took a 37-28 advantage into the final period. Oran expanded that by 3 during the final seven minutes and won 52-37.

Katelyn Streeter scored 16 and Graviett had 15 to pace the Eagles.

Claire Ramsey added 8, including 2 from beyond the arc, while Madison Graviett had 6.  Madison Ramsey had 5, including a three-pointer.  Megan Henson scored two.

They were 6 of 14 from the line for 43%.

Oran's jv improved to 5-3.

The Eagles will host conference foe Chaffee tonight at 6 pm.  The varsity will play first and the jv will follow, playing two quarters.
