The Oran High School girls basketball team started slowly but found their stride and cruised to a 65-33 win over the No.4 seeded St. Vincent Indians last night in a semi-final matchup at the Delta New Year's Tournament.
The Eagles struggled early but managed to build a 15-6 first quarter lead. Oran turned it up a notch over the middle two frames, outscoring the Indians 43-20 to build the final 32 point margin.
Coach Ethan Evans told the blog, "I thought we played much better defensively this game as opposed to the Meadow Heights game, especially in the half court set. We got off to a slow start offensively but were able to get out in the open floor and score some points in transition towards the end of the 1st quarter and into the 2nd quarter."
Leah Cauble had a game-high 29 for Oran, who improved to 9-0. She hit 1 trey and dished out 6 assists. Jessie Long had 19 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals. Long hit 9 of 10 from the field, including her first career three-point shot on a designed inbounds play during the second half.
Kayle Payne had 8, including two long-range bombs, and a team-high 7 boards. Kenzie Graviett had 6 points and Brianna Stause hit a three-pointer.
The entire roster saw action.
The Eagles ended up shooting 54.8% from inside the arc (23-42) and 31.2% from beyond (5-16). From the line, they were 4-8 for 50%.
Oran, the number 1 seed, will face the second-seeded Saxony Lutheran Crusaders in the championship game tonight at 7:30. The Eagles have lost 6 straight to Saxony including last year's title game, where the seeds were reversed, by a score of 52-30.
