Oran beats Bernie

The Oran High School boys varsity basketball team ended its two-game Christmas tournament losing streak with a 58-40 win last night over the visiting Bernie Mules 58-40.  The junior varsity lost 62-24.

In the first game of the evening, the Eagles fell behind early and never got back into it.

They trailed 15-6 after one and were down 34-11 at the break and things got no better the rest of the way.

Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "We had several players who didn't make practice over Christmas break and it showed when we played a very good Bernie JV team who is undefeated so far this year."

Tristen Schlosser led Oran with 6 points on two three-pointers, William Kluesner had 5 and Peyton McVay had 4.  Denver Elfrink and Calen Reed each added 3.  Reed's points were on a trey.  Joey Phillips had 2 points and Avery Mitchem had 1.  Kaiden Massey played but did not score.

As a team. they were 3 of 8 from the line for  38%.  They are now 2-5 on the season.

In the feature game, the Eagles had big first and third quarters but struggled in the second in their 18 point win.

Oran came out shooting well early, hitting 3 of their first 4 shots from the field and both free throw attempts to take an early 8-2 lead enroute to a 21-12 margin after one.  During the first eight minutes, both Max and Cole Priggel picked up 2 personal fouls.  When Max Priggel picked up his third early in the second he was relegated to the bench and did not return before halftime.

In his absence, the Eagles struggled on the offensive end. They didn't score for nearly two and a half minutes of period two before Jacob Shoemaker hit the second of two free throws.  Fortunately, the visitors were nearly as inept. Then Oran put together an 8 point run to push the lead to 11, 28-17 with just under three minutes remaining before intermission and a Bernie time out.  The Mules then outscored Oran 8-2 and the Eagles held only a slim 5 point edge after the first half of play.

After the break, Oran came out on fire.

The Eagles scored the first 15 points of the third quarter to take a 45-25 lead before Bernie hit a field goal at the 3:15 mark to cut it back to 18.

That was the margin entering the final period when Oran took the air out of the ball.

Coach Shoemaker said, "We played through some foul trouble in the first half and played well in the second half.  After the Christmas tournament, we made some tweaks to our man offense and we were able to use it in the fourth quarter when they went to a man defense.  The boys were very patient since we had the lead and we were able to take some time off of the clock and did a good job running the offense."

Max Priggel led the team in scoring with 19.  Jacob Shoemaker was also in double-digits with 16.  He hit one from beyond the arc.

Cole Priggel added 8, Layne Johnson had 6, Drew Reischman 5 and Wyatt Kinney chipped in 4.  Kinney's points came in the second quarter when the Eagles were struggling to score.  Luke Barnes saw action but not the scoring column.

Oran hit 11 of their 13 free throw attempts for 85% and pushed their record over the .500 mark at 6-5.

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday for a 6 pm tip, when they travel to Saxony Lutheran to take on a very good Crusaders' team.
