Eagles split at home

The Oran High School boys basketball teams won one and lost one last night against the visiting Woodland Cardinals.  The junior varsity came up short 54-48 while the varsity ended a two-game losing skid to the class 3 school from Bollinger county, by picking up a 77-66 win on Senior Night.

During game one, the Cardinals led after the first, 14-10.  Oran regrouped and was on top at the half 27-24.

The Eagles were up 34-27 with 2 minutes left in the third, but the score was tied 36-36 heading into the final frame.

With 3:23 remaining Todd Priggel grabbed an offensive rebound on a missed free throw and was fouled in the act of shooting. He made the first and the home team was up 41-40.  With 2:55 remaining Priggel had an offensive putback and the score was 43-42.  But empty possessions would follow.  They would relinquish the lead and then, forced to foul, the Eagles were outscored 12-5 down the stretch.

Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "I thought we fought hard and made adjustments throughout the game but just couldn't get over the hump of a poor shooting night."

Priggel and Landon Stanberry both scored 13.  Tyson Goodale had 6 points.  Kaiden Massey and Tristen Schlosser both put in 5.  Schlosser hit a trey.  Calen Read added 4 while Bradley Brooks chipped in 2.

Jakob Findley and Avery Mitchem played but did not score.

As a team, they hit 5 of 11 from the line for 45%.

The night cap opened with Woodland having a huge size advantage on the jump ball.  Their back tip, however, went straight to Jacob Shoemaker who drove to the goal and gave Oran a quick 2-0 lead.  That would be the only time, until late in the 3rd period, that the Eagles would be on top.

The Cardinals led 21-17 after the first 8 minutes and were up 35-30 with the clock winding down just before halftime when Shoemaker hit a 3 as the buzzer went off to cut the deficit to 2.

During the third quarter, on more than one occasion, Woodland would stretch the lead to 8 or 9 and then Oran would cut it to 1 or 2.  After suffering some close losses this season, it was impossible to wonder if this wouldn't be another.  But with 2:50 remaining in the period, Shoemaker hit a trey to tie the game at 48 and then Cole Priggel was fouled on a drive to the rim and made both free throws to take a 50-48 lead.  Shoemaker would drain another three-pointer at horn and it was 59-54, Oran.

In the final 8 minutes the Eagles rode the hot shooting hand of senior Max Priggel, who scored 9 of his game-high 26 during the frame, as they stretched the lead to 18.  Oran was able to play keep away for several minutes.  The Cardinals hit a couple of late 3's to shrink the final margin to 11.

Coach Shoemaker commented, "I was very pleased with the effort from the varsity as we were able to control the tempo as the game went on. I thought we did a good job on the boards especially in the second half."

"I would really like to thank the three seniors Max, Wyatt and Luke for their commitment to the program over the last four years."

Max Priggel's 26, included 5 treys.  Shoemaker had 19 points.  He too, hit 5 long-range bombs. Layne Johnson had a season-high 18, he hit one from beyond the arc.  Cole Priggel, the fourth Eagle in double-digits scored 10.  Senior Wyatt Kinney added 4.

Senior Luke Barnes, Todd Priggel and Drew Reischman played , but did not score.

Oran hit a total of 11 three-point shots.  They were 10 of 14 at the charity stripe for 71%.

The junior varsity fell to 4-8 while the varsity improved to 12-7.

The teams will be back in action this evening when they travel to conference rival Chaffee for a 6 pm start.  For the older team, the Red Devils are also a district opponent.
