Eagles sweep Hawks

The Oran High School boys basketball teams picked up two conference wins last night over the visiting Kelly Hawks. The junior varsity broke a five-game losing streak with a 68-49 victory and the varsity moved over .500 when they won 70-47.

During the opener, the Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 lead.  After a Kelly timeout and the Hawks regrouped to keep the game tight early.  Oran led by 5 after one, 15-10.

The second quarter proved to be the difference-maker as the Eagles outscored their guests 19-9 to take a 15 point lead, 34-19, into the break and were never threatened afterward.

Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "The JV has had some better practices lately and it showed on how they played last night. They are starting to play better and more importantly be better teammates to each other. We still have some basketball mistakes to clean up but they are headed in the correct direction."

Landon Stanberry led all scorers with 21.  Tyson Goodale also hit for double-digits with 16.

Jakob Findley, Avery Mitchem and Calen Read all hit for 8 points.  Mitchem and Read were both 4-4 from the line.  Kaiden Massey hit 2 free throws  Carson Moyers played but did not score.

Oran was 14 of 25 at the line as a team for 56%.

The junior varsity is now 2-1 in league play and 3-6 overall.

The feature game was nip and tuck in the first quarter.  The Eagles trailed with 3 minutes left 10-7 when Layne Johnson hit two free throws to cut the lead to 1.  Oran then started pressing and went on a 6-2 spurt to close out the first 15-12.

The lead grew to 11 at the half, 31-20, and the Eagles cruised to the 23 point win.

Max Priggel, Johnson and Jacob Shoemaker all scored in double-figures for Oran.  Priggel had 19, including 2 treys.  Johnson hit for a season-high 17, he hit 1 from beyond the arc and was 8-8 from the line.  Shoemaker scored 14 and had 1 three-pointer.

Drew Reischman had 6.  Cole Priggel and Luke Barnes both added 4.  Wyatt Kinney chipped in 2 points and took a couple of charges on the defensive end.  Bradley Brooks hit a field goal and Joey Phillips hit both of his free throw attempts to round out the scoring.

The entire roster saw the court.

The Eagles were 22 of 29 from the charity stripe for 76%.

Coach Shoemaker said, "The varsity had a slow start and never really got into a good rhythm or flow.  We had some times where we weren't in the correct spots, which I wasn't happy with, but you have to give Kelly some credit with switching their defenses up with their traps.  After the first quarter we were able to overcome our poor shooting with better rebounding and defensive effort.  Sometimes players will carry their shooting problems with them into the other phases of the game but we were able to sustain enough energy and intensity to overcome that."

The varsity is now 3-1 in Scott-Miss play and 8-7 overall.

The boys conference tournament is next week and the seed meeting is today.  Here are the current standings.
