The Oran High School junior varsity boys basketball team not only had to overcome it's opponent last night, Oak Ridge but also themselves. Discipline issues affected playing time and that combined with a 13 point 4th quarter deficit proved too much as the 3rd seeded Eagles fell to the 6th seeded Blue Jays 51-49 in overtime in a semifinal contest during the Scott-Mississippi Conference tournament.
It was a slow start by both teams and Oak Ridge led 5-4 after 1. At the half, Oran trailed 22-15 and by the end of the third, the score was 36-23.
The Eagles mounted a furious comeback during the final seven minutes and managed to tie the score at 47 at the end of regulation, but overtime saw the Blue Jays pull off the upset by outscoring Oran 4-2.
Tyson Goodale led all scorers with 20, 10 of which came during that fourth quarter rally. Jakob Findley and Calen Read both scored 9. Read hit one from beyond the arc. Landon Stanberry added 6, including a trey, while Kaiden Massey rounded out the scoring with 5. He hit the game-tying field goal with 4 seconds remaining in the fourth.
Avery Mitchem, Carson Moyers and Tristen Schlosser played but did not score.
The Eagles were only 5 of 12 from the line for 42%.
With the loss, their record falls to 3-7.
They will get an opportunity for revenge when the Blue Jays travel to Oran next Tuesday evening for a regular-season conference matchup at 6 pm.
The 3rd seeded varsity will take on the 2nd seeded East Prairie Eagles tonight at 7:45 in a quarterfinal matchup at Kelly High School.
