Baseball opens season with "W"

The Oran Eagles opened their 2017 fall baseball campaign with a come from behind victory over the class 2 Whippets from Ellington on Friday evening during the opening round of the inaugural of the Bank of Grandin Fall Classic in Ellsinore on Brodie Gargac Memorial Field by a final score of 3-1.

The game was a pitcher's duel for the most part.

Oran, the visiting team on the scoreboard,  got a one-out single from Todd Priggel in the top of the first but he was unable to advance.

Eagle starter Layne Johnson gave up the only two hits that Ellington would manage during the bottom of the first and combined with a base on balls, the Whippets had a 1-0 lead after one.

Back to back two-out singles by Johnson and Priggel were wasted in the third and the score was still 1-0 Ellington when Oran came to bat in the 6th.

Johnson started the inning with a walk.  He moved to second on Priggel's third single of the game.  Drew Reischman hit into a fielder's choice that retired Priggel at second but advanced Johnson to third.

At that point, Ellington replaced their starting pitcher.  Clay Sauceda hit the first pitch he saw from the reliever for a rbi fielder's choice allowing Johnson to score but forcing Reischman at second.  Cole Priggel hit the very next pitch over the left-center field fence to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead.

Sauceda came on in relief and was able to keep the Whippets in check, thanks in a part to a nice diving catch by Johnson, who had moved to center field, on the first batter in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Second baseman Luke Patterson also made a nice catch on a line drive to his left to end the game with a runner on base.

Freshman Ty Johnson had a double in the 7th and Oran also worked a couple of walks but could not add onto the lead.

Layne Johnson picked up the win.  He went 5 innings and allowed the 1 earned run on 2 hits.  He struck out 10 while walking 4.  Sauceda worked 2 innings to pick up the save.  He walked 2 and struck out 2.  He did not allow a hit.

Todd Priggel was 3-4. Cole Priggel had the home run and 2 rbi.  Ty Johnson had the only other extra-base hit with his 7th inning double.
