Boys basketball preview

The Oran High School basketball Eagles will start its season as the defending state champions for the first time ever this year.  The Eagles lost three seniors from last year's squad, Max Priggel, Wyatt Kinney and Luke Barnes.

Priggel was last year's class 2 player of the year.  He was the Scott-Mississippi Conference player of the year.  He was also named to the all-district team.  He averaged 19.5 points per game and four and a half rebounds a contest.

They return all-state junior Jacob Shoemaker, who also all-district and all-conference.  He scored at a rate of 15.8 a game and grabbed a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game.

Other returning starters include senior Layne Johnson.  His numbers included 9.6 points and 6.5 rebounds a game. Also back is senior Cole Priggel who averaged 9.9 points a contest and at times took over the offense with his slashing drives to the hoop.  Sophomore Todd Priggel who missed much of last season due to injury looks to continue his improvement as he averaged just over four points and four boards over the last 14 games of the season.

Coach Joe Shoemaker, last season's class two boy's coach of the year said, "I think the high school team has been working hard in practice so far. We need to continue to work on blocking out, rebounding and team defense. We have several freshmen that are getting used to how we do things and will hopefully continue to develop as the season goes on. Our varsity bench will need to develop and I expect them to do that as they get varsity game experience.  I am looking forward to another exciting year of Eagle basketball and all of the great fan support that we get."
