Boys fly into finals

The Oran High School boys basketball teams both advanced into the Scott-Mississippi Conference tournament finals tomorrow.  The junior varsity, who is seeded first, defeated Delta 57-49 and will face 2) East Prairie at 3 pm.   The varsity Eagles, who also got the top-seed, beat Scott County Central 77-60 and play the third-seeded East Prairie Eagles at 4:30.

In tonight's opener the junior varsity, who had received a first-round bye and had not played in over a week, started slow and trailed early before taking an 18-15 lead after one quarter.  The Eagles expanded the lead to 35-23 at the intermission, thanks in a large part to Ty Johnson who scored 20 of his game-high 27 points during the first two quarters.  He hit four of his five treys during that period.

Out of the break, Oran committed four consecutive turnovers and missed a shot allowing Delta to cut the lead to 35-32 with 4:30 left in the third.

Heading into the final seven minutes, the Eagles held a tenuous 43-38 advantage.

With five minutes left, the Bobcats made another run, tying the score at 45.  Oran hit six of seven free throws in the final period and went on a 12-4 run to close out the game.

Besides Johnson's 27, Myles Trankler had 10.

Langdon Scheeter scored six as did Logan Rose.  Cooper Priggel hit a 3-pointer and both of his free throw attempts and ended up with five points.  Tristin Schlosser hit a trey to round out the scoring.

The Eagles hit 10 of 11 from the charity stripe for 91%.  Delta, on the other hand, was only 3 of 13 for 23%.

The junior varsity improved to 10-2.  Earlier this season Oran had beaten Delta 55-50 at their place.

In mid-December, Oran defeated East Prairie on the road, 58-37.

Coach Chris Nichols, who had the reins tonight with Coach Joey Bickings attending the baseball coaches clinic, said, "We played a very hard working Delta team tonight.  At times we had trouble keeping the ball in front and other teammates rotating. We also had some turnovers that led to points for them.

In the second half, I felt we started doing a better job moving on offense and getting the ball to the open player.  This group does a good job of sharing the basketball and picking up their teammates when shots don’t fall.

I was very pleased the way our guards played confidently in the last quarter.  We did a good job knocking down our free throws and getting big rebounds.

Tomorrow night will be a battle.  Hopefully, we can clean up our mistakes and be ready to come out and play hard."

During the varsity contest, Oran trailed after one, 23-21 but thanks to a Jacob Shoemaker three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer, The Eagles led the Braves 41-38.  During the second half, Oran outscored Scott Central 36-22 to claim the 17 point victory.

Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "I thought we didn’t start with enough defensive intensity but improved as the game went on. We executed better on the offensive end in the second half also. We now get another shot at East Prairie for the championship."

Shoemaker led all scorers with 31.  He had nine points from beyond the arc and made all four of his free throw tries.  Cole Priggel scored 15 and made all three of his free shots.  Todd Priggel and Layne Johnson both added 11.   Johnson hit a trey and both of his free throws.

Drew Reischman finished with six and Tyson Goodale had three points.

The varsity hit 11 of 14 from the line for 79%.

Earlier this season, during the O.I.T, the Eagles had defeated the Braves, 82-61.

Orana lost to East Prairie 68-59 in their regular season matchup.
