The top-seeded Oran Eagles varsity boys basketball team took on the number-eight seed Scott City Rams last night in the opening round of the 2018 Scott-Mississippi Conference tournament at Chaffee. Neither team had played in at least a week and because of the recent wintry weather practice time had been limited. The Eagles started off slow but shook off the rust and cruised to a 62-31 win.
Oran trailed early but managed a 15-13 lead after one quarter with both Layne Johnson and Drew Reischman in early foul trouble with two apiece. After that, it was pretty much the silence of the Rams, as the Eagles outscored Scott City 47-18 the rest of the way, including a 21-2 second period to put the game on ice.
Jacob Shoemaker led all scorers with 18. He hit the team's only trey. Cole Priggel added 15 and Tyson Goodale netted 10 off the bench.
Todd Priggel finished with nine and Bradley Brooks had six. Reischman had two points as did Peyton McVey to round out the scoring.
The Eagles were 5 of 8 from the line for 63%.
Of the Rams 31 points, 18 came from beyond the arc.
Oran is now 12-3 and will face (4) Scott County Central at 7 pm in a semifinal matchup.
The junior varsity squad (9-1), who received a first-round bye, will open the day's action at 4 pm when they take on #4 Delta.
