Boys split in finale

The Oran High School boys basketball teams finished its regular season on the road last night in Advance.  The junior varsity picked up a big 87-46 victory, but the varsity squandered a double-digit lead and lost 68-63.

The younger team trailed 18-16 after the first period but took a 42-35 lead into the break.  It was a huge third quarter by the Eagles that put the game away, however.  Oran outscored Advance, 32-9 and cruised to the mercy-rule victory.

Coach Joe Bickings said, "I thought our jayvee played a really good game last night.  We were able to take a lead at half time and make some adjustments on their best player and have that lead grow from 10 or so to almost 30 points by the end of the 3rd Quarter.  We were able to hit some shots from the outside and also getting the ball inside.  Tyson Goodale had a really good game in the first and only half he played.  I thought Cooper Priggel did a good job of being ready to shoot when he was open and then also driving at times.  Ty Johnson and Langdon Scheeter did an excellent job on their best player defensively in the 3rd quarter by not letting him score after he scored 18 in the first half.  I felt like it was an all-around effort by the team to get the win."

Goodale led all scorers with 21.  Priggel had 16, including two treys and was three for three from the line.  Scheeter had 15 and he hit a three-pointer.  Johnson had ten and he nailed two from beyond the arc.

Kaiden Massey finished with nine and Tristen Schlosser had eight.  Lane Peterson and Dane Shands both hit three's.  Logan Rose hit a field goal.

They made 6 of 16 free throws for 38%.

Coach Bickings added, "It was our last game for the JV squad.  They finished the season 15-4.  Of our four losses, one came from Chaffee’s Varsity and another from Saxony JV in the Advance Tournament.  The other two losses we had the ball at the end of the game with a chance to win but the shot just didn’t fall.  Overall it was a good season but at the same time, there is always room for improvement.  The message from the coaching staff after the game was to work on the things you need to work on to make yourself a complete player and to get stronger by getting in the weight room."

[note:  I did not originally count the loss to Chaffee's varsity on the jv record, but since the coach did, I changed the Schedule/Result page to reflect that.]

The varsity Eagles took a two-point lead after one quarter, 15-13.  But, trailed by four at the intermission, 29-24.  Oran got the lead early in the third and expanded it to 11, 44-33 with 1:34 left in the period.  But, that's when the Hornets started chipping away.

It was 44-34 heading into the final eight minutes.

With 6:32 remaining the lead was down to two, 46-44.  The Eagles were up 52-49 at the 4:36 mark but Advance was ahead 55-54 about a minute and a half later.  Oran trailed by three, 66-63 and had the ball but a desperation shot missed and the Hornets were able to convert on a layup at the buzzer.

Jacob Shoemaker led the Eagles with 18 points.  He hit two from beyond the arc and both of his free throw attempts.  Drew Reischman stepped up with 15, with eight of those coming in the first period.  Cole Priggel had 12.  He made all four of his free shots.

Layne Johnson and Todd Priggel had eight apiece.  Johnson hit two treys.  Goodale added two at the varsity level.

As a team, they hit 9 of 13 for 62%.

Coach Joe Shoemaker said, "I thought we played hard but had a couple of mistakes that you just can’t have against good teams.  We had won the last three games against Advance and playing at their place we knew it would be a battle. I was proud of how our boys competed with good attitudes and effort. Hopefully, they will clean those mistakes up as we head into districts."

Oran finishes the regular season with an 18-5 record and will compete in the Class 2, District 2 tournament in Perryville at the Perry Park Center on Saturday.  The second-seeded Eagles will face the #7 Bismarck Indians at 4:15.
